ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Feb 20, 2009 16.9 ounce bottle - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a surprisingly clear, very dark, reddish-brown body with an inch of bubbly, off-white head.
Smell: Mild, roast nose with meager notes of chocolate, nuts, and fruit.
Taste: Roasty, coffee-toned malts with a surprisingly large dose of chocolate. A few oven-toasted almonds tossed in. Medium sweetness throughout. Very minor tough of sourish fruitiness. Rather hop character and bitterness. Finishes dry with a lingering taste of roasted malts.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Just a tad light in the body, but otherwise a pleasant, easy-drinking porter. mcsquint (93), , Missouri, USA Feb 8, 2009 Poured from imperial pint bottle into dimpled mug.
Aroma - Dark roasted malt, milky chocolate, and a bit of coffee.
Appearance - Opaque black in color. Nice two finger tan head, that diminishes somewhat quickly, leaving light lacing on inside of glass.
Flavor - Chocolate malt, more coffee than the smell would indicate, a bit of mild hops on the finish.
Palate - Not as slick or as lingering as some English porters. Nice balance of malt and hops gives it a surprisingly quick finish.
Overall - I would have to add this to my short list of drinkable porters. This has lots of flavor, yet not so heavy as to limit me to one bottle.
RichardW (241), Carlisle, Cumbria, England Feb 7, 2009 Bottled. Deeply fruity and rich, with a subtle taste of treacle. Complex and heavy, with plenty of bitterness, but tastes fantastic, reminds me of liquid Christams Pudding. A ruby tinge in a fine black ale. brewmaster55 (48), , Wisconsin, USA Feb 1, 2009 I am a fan of Porters, this beer, I am not a fan of. It smelled "Of Crotch" according to fellow beer drinkers. Where as I think that may be off, it certainly did have a horrible aroma from the start. Taste wise it wasn’t much better, very skunky perhaps just a bad batch. Perhaps I will give it another chance, but it will be a while. Grossecaisse (108), France Feb 1, 2009 One of my favourite stout. it is a very dark brew, very bitter, but with an intensity in the tastes dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Jan 11, 2009 16.9 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Stamped 8142. Pours a deep copper color with a medium head. Average head retention and lacing. Aroma is chocolate primary with slight roasted malts and tobacco. Taste is bitter roasted malts with coffee and chocolate notes. Some subtle tobacco here as well. Medium bodied. sparkymcspark (3), , Michigan, USA does not count Jan 9, 2009 Not sure what was wrong with the one I had, but it was nasty. The immediate smell from the bottle was skunky. The only reason it was drunk was because it was already in my glass. Oh, well at least I tried it. hopheaven (83), Eureka, California, USA Jan 7, 2009 Updated: Jan 10, 2009Pours a clear, dark-complexioned brown with little head. The bottle is wonderfully nostalgiac. Smells like pumpernickel bread and coffee. Has the sweet, burnt aroma of an old and oft-used coffee pot. A bit tart, not too bitter. This beer is rich and dark and enigmatic. Tastes of coffee, cocoa, au jous, black licorice, raisins. Medium carbonation with a delicate mouthfeel; mildly hopped. This is a damn good porter, and quite different than American offerings.
