whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 1, 2004 Clear dark ruby body and a soapy tan head. Aroma of dark fruits and smoke. Roasty malt and coffee flavor and nice late hoppiness. Good, lingering aftertaste. This is another pleasant surprise from St. Peter's. Very fresh beer in a cool dark, vintage bottle based on an 18th century antique from the great state of New Jersey. Has a British brewery finally learned how to export beer?
jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 1, 2004 Dark brown with a moderate beige head that disappears leaving behind a film and some half decent lacing. Aroma of roasty coffee with something swirling beneath it that I couldn't pull out. Flavour is similar with a roasty coffee like bitterness dominating. Body is a tad thin but flavourful. Would fare better if I was more inclined towards coffee. zen (41), Long Beach, California, USA Mar 23, 2004 Pours a decent size head, nice ocean water-like lace all the way to the bottom. Very, very subdued nose with a trace of raisin and date. Tastes of dates, bits of chocolate and a bit of hop finish accompanied by bits of roasted malt and burnt charcoal pieces. Nice full medium body. One of the finest porters I've had, perfect carbonation and just as complex as any other I've tried. One of the finer examples of the style.
Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA Mar 21, 2004 St. Peter’s Old Style Porter – 3.85
The beer after vamoosing from the unique green bottle pours a deep incarnadine color, the head mediocre in size, the texture creamy and the Irish lace pronounced on the sides of the glass. Nose is a tad earthy, somewhat sweet, fresh and crisp, seems to be a hint of peat? Start is lightly sweet, nice malt profile; the top is fair to middling in its feel to the palate. Finish has a nice mild acidity, the hops pleasing in their spiciness, quite dry and a nice mild English Porter, one worth a sample at least.
maltdog (510), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 19, 2004 Very dark cola brown with laser ruby highlights; sparse white head. Aromas of instant coffee granules, molasses, chocolate chip cookies, and yeasty dough. Mabye an almost skunky suggestion of hot grass clippings? Also very faint charcoal grill and licorice notes. There's an entertaining parade of flavors with every sip- starting with dark malts and a lactic tang, then malty sweetness, chocolate bread, pistachios, and bitter turkish coffee (which remains into the aftertaste); finally, acrid hop or black barley emerges. Long, broad bittersweet aftertaste. Fairly full-bodied without being syrupy. Surpasses nearly all the US microbrewed porters I've had. PhrankSlovacek (54), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Mar 16, 2004 Chocolate and coffee aroma. Dark brown color. Sweet chocolatey, smooth taste. Good tasting well crafted porter. Worth a try or two. firemedic713 (169), Palm Bay, Florida, USA Mar 15, 2004 Dark brown color, pours with small tan head. Earthy, ferrous, dark bitter chocolate, and bitter hops. Very nice porter in a very attractive bottle. Gunny (41), Dundas, Ontario, Canada Mar 5, 2004 Dark brown with ruby tinged edges and a thin tan head. Distinctive roast aroma with notes of nuts and chocolate. I noted a faint metallic/ferrous scent as well. The initial flavour is all about malt with plenty of chocolate and a balancing dark roast bitterness. The finish fades too quickly with some metallic/ferrous notes.
