Clear red-brown in color, with a slight, fine head. Bready, toffee, lightly roasted and coffeeish malt flavor, with a gently bittering, tart, fruity finish. Light-medium body, with a brief, thin palate. Definitely very interesting, at least from a historical standpoint. caesar (3035), Bunnik/Utrecht, Netherlands

Aroma is roasted with notes of pine and citrus. Smooth hop bite up front, light creamy mouthfeel, very nice. Mostly malt on the finish, with a touch of licorice. A very fine beer just a touch overhopped. ravidesai (915), Bombay, India

Subtle aromas of chocolate and malts. There is a grainy, almost burnt sugar taste that is balanced with some bitterness. Nice toasted aftertaste. Substantial but not too thick or overpowering with a simple, but addictive flavor. Bonus points for the old school bottle. crazyvin (1255), New York, USA

It poured a nice dark reddish brown hue with a thin tanish head. Aroma was a mix of cocca and roast coffee. Taste was sweet with some bitter coffee notes, kinda watery. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 24, 2004 Had to fight like hell to get a head on this beer. Large bubbles which did not last long. Swirling produces a nice thin foam. Nice roasted aroma. Roasted grains, burnt fried fish sticks and a good helping of licorice. Color is a deep port. Flavor is a bit watery and gritty. Tastes like there is some carbon present. Distinct burnt flavor with a bit of molasses. Finish is dry and smooth. Lingering bitterness and roasted flavor. Great aroma but is a little short in the flavor department. Thanks to radiomgb for this one!
