Pours a dark amber colour with a thin bibby head. Aromas of caramel and malt. Nice full-bodied beer with lots of smooth malty goodness and the right amount of bitterness. Not what I expected from a "summer" beer though

Very dark amber, light fizzy head. The nose is sweet with a slight yeastiness. Very fruity and just a barely noticeable hint of chocolate. The body is smooth and quite bitter. A good, tasty fruitiness is finished by a lingering bitterness. A slightly sweet malt backbone is noticeable at last taste and makes things a bit interesting. Very good summer ale, I could drink a few of these.

BottledLovely beer this. Deep amber colour, proud white head. Caramel and malt nose. Big thick and smooth malt flavour. Strong body and alcohol. Had the Pommy around last night for a some beers, and of the 3 new ones I think we enjoyed this the most. Standing around the BBQ on a hot summers night, life felt like it was really coming together.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2004 RE-RATE: Rich ruby-gold colour, smells smoky, woodsy, perhaps like pine nuts hint of vinegar. Sweet malty taste with definite caramel aftertaste, but still bitter enough. Quite a bit of baker's chocolate. The alcohol content makes this a winner, as it's totally masked. A party in my mouth.

Caramel aroma, amber colour. Small head. Extreme hoppy taste, bitter with subtle sweet finish. Caramel sweet aftertaste. Nice.

(500ml medicine bottle) Pours near headless, white top. Dissipates instantly. Low carbonation, copper body. Very sweet malt nose; some flowery-cask whiskey undertones. 6.5% - Wow! Thick, smooth. Upfront alcohol kick into a smooth finish. Nice malt flavour. Other than the flat appearance and taste, I really like this...

Light aroma. Slightly metallic, mineral sweet light malt ale. That’s not best recipe for good ale. Uneventful and forgettable.

Malt, hops and citrus nose, copper, with a medium custard head, and nice lace. Grapefruit, and hops bitterness, in the initial taste, some fine woodiness there too. Some candied malt also. Great body, good mouth feel, neat dry bitter finish. A really good example!

Interestingly good. Amber in colour with a large head that wouldn't stop! Malty and with great bitters that were very complimenting to my palate. I didn't even notice the alcohol content. Good full bodied beer. The hops were nice. Slightly middle of the road for me. I would have this again and I would probaly tell others to have it as well. Decent.

Pours a very striking caramel-amber colour with a small head. Rich and complex aroma of caramel, dark fruits and tingling alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and pleasant, with sweet earthy malts off the top, and mild hop bitterness and boozy warmth in the finish. As Oakes has already noted, it seems strange to have this full, rich beer as a "summer ale" in a city where the summers are generally stinking hot and unbearably humid. But when a beer is this good, I'm not going to argue, I'll just shut up and drink it.
