"Whisky Beer"
A superb balanced beer with ’smokey’ overtones from peated malt. With a measure of English Whisky from St. George’s Distillery in Norfolk, it is rich in flavour.

Bottle. Pours nice clear amber, with an airy head. Nice aroma of caramel malt, toffee, peat and oak barrels. Full body with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with burned malt and whisky notes, as well as some butter scotch and notes of diacetyl with a smokey finish.

(bottle) pours a slightly hazy golden colour with a frothy white head. aroma of heavy ash and campfire smoke, slightly medicinal, with a hint of earth, vanilla and chilli peppers. flavour is mostly the same, with notes of smoked ham, chestnuts, black pepper and a bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle from Woodbridge Wine Company. Pours and mid orange yellow colour, minimal head, soon disappearing. Too strong for my liking on the smoke/peat and the whiskey aspect didn’t work for me.

Clear gold beer, thin white head. Crispy light palate. Smoky whisky! Big time! Totally dominates. A little pale malt and minerals. Crisp finish. Way too much peat!

500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cool in a tulip glass. 13OC12.

App.: Clear deep golden/light amber with a moderate white froth. Aroma: Fairly strong peaty smoke, a little biscuit and fruitiness, iodine and brine, like a so-so ale with a shot of big Islay Scotch in it. Palate: Medium body, fairly aggressive effervescence. Flav.: Lots of peat smoke with insufficient malt support, biscuits, lightly fruity; dry with minimal bitterness and a strong peat smoke finish.

Way too much peat, Pete!

Bottle, shared with BBGTC. Pours a slightly hazy orange-golden body with a medium creamy white head. Aroma is heavy peat and whisky tones, pale malts and cured meat. Taste is pale malts and whiskey/tar-ish notes, hints of nuts and muted caramel in the back. A bit watery palate, which doesn’t stand up to the peat-and-whisky assault offered by both aroma and taste. Not too bad, still.

The beer pours a translucent red-tinged gold colour with a thin tan head. The aroma is smoked malt, whisky, and grains. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is smoked malt, with some sweetness to balance it out (and fails).

(Bottle, Jerusalem Tavern, Farringdon, London, 20 Nov 2012) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with smoke, apricots, citric hops and a touch of peat. Smoky, fruity taste with notes of apricots, orange peel and smoke. A certain bitterness shines through in the finish. Medium body, with some sweetness. Different, and quite decent.
