A deep ruby red strong ale with an excellent balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. A classic example of a ’winter warmer’; high in alcohol and rich in taste.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2014 50 cl bottle from SB. A rich flavor with hints of port wine, dark chocolate, dried plums, dark syrup, dark fruit bread, fudge, melted butter and cardamom. At "only" 6.5%, this is one of the weakest ABV christmas ales I’m sampling this year. The rather low alcohol strength (compared primarily to Belgian ales) is however not necessarily a disadvantage. The complexity of this ale doesn’t quite get to the levels of some of its world-class Belgian comrades, but then again, the UK has always been behind Belgium in the search for liquid God. The flavor, mouthfeel and overall impression of this beer is still very good. This would suit perfectly to traditional Christmas food like salty cheeses, home-cooked ham, sweet and strong mustard, home-made meatballs, etc.

500ml bottle. Near black pour with a good amount of head. Aroma is slow to awaken. Sugary grape skin mostly. Dark dried fruits. Cola. Taste is spicier and easily recognisable as a winter ale. Bready malts. More cola. Something slightly rough about the taste which detracts somewhat. Decent stuff.

says ruby red, but looks like a porter to me. nice rich, malty aroma. a little chocolate, coffee, a touch of hops. similar flavor. smooth feel. now i remember why i really dig their porter and stout. definite house flavor, but it’s a good one.

0,5L bottle. Pours brown with tan head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, malt, caramel, some grass and dark fruit notes. Flavor is sweet, caramel, burnt sugar, some malt and dark fruits. Finish is malty sweet and slightly nutty bitter. Overall: ok brew.

Bottle, 500ml. A pitch black beer with a small reddish hue at the bottom, a medium size brown creamy head and some lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, dry fruits and alcohol. Taste is bitter, well-balanced and with a mild finish. Faint carbonatation and astringency. A very drinkable beer.

Kolsvart med litet ljusbrunt skum! Doftar sött av malt och lite kaffe. Smaken är söt lite jästig/kryddig och lite kaffe. Ok öl

Pours brown with a large offwhite head. Aroma of raisin, nut, treacle, bread. Fairly sweet up front, very subtle holiday spices giving way to dark bread, brown sugar, raisin, tobacco, subtle hopping. Lighter carbonation. Would be a nice beer to have with a smoke.

Det här var en rätt juste öl, helt obalanserad, men juste. Smaken bar toner av kaffe, choklad och kryddor, kroppen var okej men balansen sken med sin frånvaro.

Helt OK. Smaken lite kraftigare än aromen. Rostade toner maltig. Viss syrlighet.

Malty aroma with notes of dark fruits, raisins, brown sugar, with a dry bready note to it. hop aroma is herbal and typical english. Flavor that has a clear malty aroma, not too roasty and well balanced. This is a very good ale. I’d buy it again, at winter ;)
