A deep ruby red strong ale with an excellent balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. A classic example of a ’winter warmer’; high in alcohol and rich in taste.

Dark brown with thin head. Some sweet dark fruits in the aroma. Flavour has quite a strong bitterness. Roasted malt and also some hop bitterness too.

Brown sugar, dried fruits, nuts, coffee and some spices in the aroma. Almost black with a red tint, tan head. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium body with a soft carbonation. Overall a really nice winter ale with rich flavor and some warming alcohol.

Bottle. Pours an opaque colour, with red hues and a tan head that dies down to a clingy ring. Nose is sweet, spicey with some molasses. Tastes sweet, bitter, sweet, malt, molasses, maybe some toffee, caramel and a hint of coffee. Way different then I expected.

Poured deep dark brown with minimal off white head. Aroma of red berries, caramel malt, butterscotch. Medium body, flavour as the aroma, moderate spices.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2014 50 cl bottle from SB. A rich flavor with hints of port wine, dark chocolate, dried plums, dark syrup, dark fruit bread, fudge, melted butter and cardamom. At "only" 6.5%, this is one of the weakest ABV christmas ales I’m sampling this year. The rather low alcohol strength (compared primarily to Belgian ales) is however not necessarily a disadvantage. The complexity of this ale doesn’t quite get to the levels of some of its world-class Belgian comrades, but then again, the UK has always been behind Belgium in the search for liquid God. The flavor, mouthfeel and overall impression of this beer is still very good. This would suit perfectly to traditional Christmas food like salty cheeses, home-cooked ham, sweet and strong mustard, home-made meatballs, etc.

500ml bottle. Near black pour with a good amount of head. Aroma is slow to awaken. Sugary grape skin mostly. Dark dried fruits. Cola. Taste is spicier and easily recognisable as a winter ale. Bready malts. More cola. Something slightly rough about the taste which detracts somewhat. Decent stuff.

says ruby red, but looks like a porter to me. nice rich, malty aroma. a little chocolate, coffee, a touch of hops. similar flavor. smooth feel. now i remember why i really dig their porter and stout. definite house flavor, but it’s a good one.

0,5L bottle. Pours brown with tan head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, malt, caramel, some grass and dark fruit notes. Flavor is sweet, caramel, burnt sugar, some malt and dark fruits. Finish is malty sweet and slightly nutty bitter. Overall: ok brew.
