Bottle bought at Schaliënhuis Prik en Tik in Temse. Pous dark brown with a big creamy beige head. Well carbonation. Nose: caramel, roasted malts, floral perfumed. Taste: bit watery in the beginning, afterwards: roasted malts with floral touches. Finishing is bit watery with floral and coffee notes and a medium bitterness that sticks in the aftertaste. Amber-burgundy colour. Aroma is light, with treacle notes and a slight peach fruitiness. The body is light, but offers a vibrant character. Toffee and light orange notes abound, but are drowned out by too much alcohol in the finish.

Ruby colored with a nice frothy head. Dried fruit, sweetness and alcohol in the aroma. Flavors were dried cherries and prunes, malt and too little spice. Decent, but not something I’d look for again.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2006 Dark cloudy brown, almost no head, weak but ok lacing. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Flavor of brown sugar, caramel, little bit nutty, and even a touch of metallic. Some dates in the flavor as it warmed (would rather have figs or plums). Mouthfeel was thin, astringent (undeveloped), and a little watery. Re-rate, Dec 06 in Okayama, Japan, bottle: Spices in the aroma, safron, roses? Appearance was equally weak as my first w/ no lacing, some red hues to the brown. The flavor was caramel, brown sugar, some diacetyl. Bumped flavor and aroma up a notch or two.

Pours almsot black with very slight head. Lots of inital carbonation. Aroma was pretty good. Malts and spice. Flavor was very bland and flat tasting. Sort of tasted like it came out of a can. The Monks dropped the ball on this one

Bottle from BevMo. Pours a dark bronish color. Looks flat. Dark fruit aromas of raisins and fig. Decent but too flat for my taste.

Nutty, almost oxidized aromas greet my nose as I pour this into my 25cl tulip glass. The beer pours with an easily, three-finger thick, light tan colored head that sticks well to the sides of my glass. The beer is a dark, deep, concentrated red color (not black at all, but quite dark) that shows a brilliantly clear, ruby hue when held up to the light. Pronounced fruity notes of raisins and prunes add substantially to the aroma and are quite intertwined with the aforementioned nutty note. Those are the major aromatic notes, but if you really dig around there is also a musty, almost mold, malt note towards the finish.

Quite sweet tasting and with the pronounced fruity esters this actually gets a bit cloying towards the finish despite not being overly thick. Actually somewhat light bodied (especially given the sweetness), though it is a bit viscous and certainly has some heft to it that has it sticking to the palate. Fruit flavors of prune soda, concentrated raisins and a touch of fig combine with a light, toasted nut note (hazel nut perhaps?) and even a touch of Sherry. Speaking of soda, this definitely has a cola / Dr. Pepper sort of note to it, especially in the finish where the beer gets a bt cloying.

Much to sweet and cloying, which makes this brew one-dimensional in both flavor and aroma. This has a surprisingly long best by date and it makes me wonder if some heavy oxidation might dry this beer out and actually help the flavor. Unfortunately this beer is not worth that experiment, when I have way too much other beer in the stash, but someone should try it.

Ceramic bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Clear, orangey brown with a rough, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of dried fruits. Medium body with basically no carbonation. Roasted malts and a light fruitiness with a discreet hoppiness in the finish. Indifferent and not completely fresh. 221108
