The nose is full of mulberries, starfruits and quince with earthen undertones of pumice and flaxseed...OK, I confess...Iím living a lie. I admit it, I didnít smell or taste any of those things in this beer, but I can tell you that the alcohol isnít all that well-hidden (note to St. Sebastiaan: try a 14% abv WorldWide Stout to see how to hide alcohol). This is also a pretty sweet beer. Quite nice, really. The rubber stopper is a classy touch, because with 7.6% alcohol, Iím not going to polish off this whole crockware jug in one sitting.

Frothy, off-white head, diminishing fast. Sweetish flavor ith a hint of sourness. Hops, citrus and a bit of cinnamon in aroma and flavor. Thin beer, and the alcohol content is hardly noticable. The beer would be much better if it had more body.

TAR (2449) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - OCT 6, 2002
UPDATED: AUG 19, 2008 Rocky and very sticky cobweb lacework. Unfamiliar aroma of apricot, bubblegum, sour apple, grainy pale malt notes, stinky cheese (which is wonderful), phenols, leather, straw, and peppery alcohol. Very soft and round on the palate; medium light body. Peppery flavors with metallic notes, melony softness, and phenolic characteristics.

A light yeast laden pepper smell hits you in the nose and a slightly hazy golden straw glow hits your glass, topped off with a thick, creamy, solid white mircrobubble head that coats the side of the glass in thick sheets, thereís as much foam on the sides as there is on the top! A very subtle yeast flavor blends with a hint of orange rind and bubble gum. This is a very smooth, silky, elegant golden ale.

Iím a big fan of St. Sebastiaan!! The Golden is a smooth Belgian Ale that hides the high alc... Especially good for Belgian newbies.

IslandHaole (1091) - Yokosuka-Shi, Kanagawa-Ken, JAPAN - AUG 15, 2002
A copper tinted dark golden color with a foamy white head. A sweet fruity aroma, yes I get the apples as others have mentioned. A spicy alcohol becomes more evident as it warms. A nice flavor, I guess they use some of the same hops as a quality pils, thatís where the similarity ends. I bought mine in Japan too and as MRomero says, itís pretty pricey there! A very good Belgian, but not quite a great one.

A nice brew. Lively carbonation, somewhat sweet. Does taste like a heavy pilsner. At $8.38 US per bottle, it is doubtful I will buy it again in Japan.

Medium clear gold orange with tiny, just visible sediment flecks under a mountainous, white, variable bubble short lasting head. Very faint bitter hops and malt, fresh fruit and alcohol aroma. Medium to light body, lowly carbonated, bitter and malt flavours. Tastes more like a heavish pils that a strong Belgian. Quite ordinary really .

Amber-golden color. Large weak head. Aroma is malty with cookie notes and slightly alcoholic. Flavor is sweet, malty too, ending in a more balnced finish. Medium bodied.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2007 Bottle (BB Jun/2011). Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly to moderately yeasty (cobwebs, basement), with light notes of lemon peel and honey. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, yeasty. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, slightly metallic. A bit too yeasty (and not exactly a very attractive strain) to let the bright hoppy and fruity characters sing. Not the cleanest aftertaste. There is promise in this recipe, though.
