COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
St. Stanís Dark is a dark colored (20.2 SRM), top fermented beer made in the Altbier style of Dusseldorf Germany, with low carbonation and a smooth, malty medium bitter taste. The color and rich full coffee/chocolate flavors are produced from blended caramel and chocolate roasted malts. The bittering hops are Fuggles and Bullion and the aromatic hops are Cascades.

My favorite. Good head, you can taste the chocolate hops. More for the bolder beer lovers

Excellent interpretation of the style. Nice toasted chocolate malt flavor with a nice bitter twang.

Tasting Notes from Fall 2000: Smoky, chocolatey. Good bitterness that works very well with its mild sweetness

This is an unusual twist on the alt style, IMHO. Itís an extremely roasty, chocolatey altbier thatís heavy on some nice malt and possesses solid hop balance. Very enjoyable.

Very interesting twist on a Sweet Stout/Cream Stout style. First off, the color is the lightest for the syle Iíve seen. Second, the heavy malt AND hop aroma straight outta the bottle is a killer. Head dies immediately - quicker than my dogs eat their food. Seriously roasted bitterness. Thinner than I expected. Yet, under it all, good.

Dark brown color, Medium head. Roasted malts, nearly no hops, little bitterness. Nice, simple beer. Good flavor.

(12 oz bottle: Wine Time in La Jolla, CA) On the dollar shelf, so Iím not expecting much here, but you never know. There isnít a whole lot of carbonation release as I open this beer, and a light-tan sheen is slow to form on the pour, but much quicker to dissipate to a small ring. The body is a very dark ruddy-brown with a slight translucence. Iím surprised at how flavorful this beer is, and that oxidation seems pretty mild. Itís malty and moderately sweet, with brown sugar and molasses. Thereís plenty of mildly bitter, dark roasted malts, chocolate and coffee, more than I expected from an alt, and the rather potent smokiness in the finish is a pleasant surprise. There is an overtone of green peppers with a very slight spicy character and slightly astringent bitterness. Itís an old bottle of beer, so the moderate earthy flavor is not surprising, and is actually adds a positive note to the overall flavor. The nose is sweet, earthy and malty, with a slight smoky quality. Body is medium "plus", and despite the signs of poor carbonation, itís gently carbonated, but not flat. All in all, a decent beer with a few minor issues from the age, but given that this is probably a few years old, I think the beer has held up remarkably well. Not bad at all, although itís considerably different from any of the other altbiers Iíve tried. Iím cool with that though.
