3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft @ brewpub, in glass mug. Warm reddish brown with thick stable rocky head and splotchy lacing. Aroma of sweet bready malts and nice speculaas aromas. The flavors have nice spice in addition to the bread malts, adding to the speculaas character. Good quaffability and nice mineral character on the palate.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle by 26.10.12. Nose dark toffee and earth, caramel, light hops. Deep amber-brown, dark with a short sudsy beige head. Not really all that sweet or bitter (do we call that balance?), hint of sourness that seems like it might be the winner. A little more fruit in the mouth than nose. Heavy medium-full body, too heavy, and sharp with a crisp fizz. Faint nuts and hops.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle looks very simple, but okay. Beer in the glass brownish, nice small head. Starts mild, fine malty, dry, not too roasty. Mild metallically notes. Finish still mild, dry, a bit boring. Malty notes could be more intense. Okay.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Landbierparadies, best by Feb. 23, 2014: Clear russet. Persistent eggshell foam slowly fragments but maintains a creamy fringe. Malt-rich nose of chocolate mouse, browned piecrust, toasted hazelnut, melanoidins, burnt cocoa, toffee, and some fruity esters. Fairly husky (stale coffee grounds/burnt popcorn), though. Firm prickles of carbonation. Firmly malty, initially, and exhibiting a quite lean frame which is accentuated by bright minerals. Stiff woody hop whispers enhance the complex, well-structured malt which reveals springy tobacco, fallen leaves and toasted hazelnut flavors beneath the richer unsweetened chocolate and nutty coffee flavors. Abundant licorice notes deflect the residual sugars and contribute more earthiness to the rustic malt dimensions. Huskiness becomes distracting after a few gulps, with burnt popcorn and spent coffee grounds sneaking in and hindering the sturdier, riper grains. Bitter breadcrust and substantial earthiness comprise the finish, as a dusting of cocoa dryness displaces much of the huskiness. Chocolate and coffee are two characters you just don’t commonly find in Franconian lager, even in the vast majority of dunkels, but this has an abundance of each. It’s just unfortunate about the huskiness because this is certainly one of the more complex and idiosyncratically malty landbiers I’ve come across. That said, it’s extremely easy to slug the half-liter bottle in no time.
