4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
Great beer but not a knockout. Ultimately not as memorable as the Velkopopvicky Kozel Cerny beer, which is still the best Czech dark beer. Kozel Cerny (dark) did just win the gold medal at the Belgian world beer competition in 2005. Staropramen is great but not as great as Kozel. Compare them and you will understand.

On tap at the Visitor Centre bar of the brewery on 3rd Oct 2014.
Clear dark brown with a deep red hue, beige head, the bulbous glass showing off the beer nicely. The aroma was of sweet malts, with bread and caramel type hints. The taste was malty sweet with only a mild bitterness. Medium body, but not as exciting as some beers within this style have been.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
330ml green bottle, poured into a Tulip glass. Appearance is clear dark mahogany with a medium-small tan head, that reduced quickly. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and notes of minerals. Flavours of lightly roasted malts, caramel and a hint of chocolate. Taste is light sweet and light-medium bitter. Palate is light bodied, slightly thin texture and average carbonation. Overall an okay beer, I would have liked it a bit fuller bodied.

Another one tried in Budapest - from bottle at hotel. The Guinness of lager?! Really delicious. Like a dunkel with more chocolate and malty flavor.
