3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle labeled Bandstand Barleywine at 10.5% abv. Thin head of very small bubbles with good carbonation. Excellent color of a very deep crimson brown. Sweet aroma with some caramel, candi sugar and some honeysuckle. Aroma is actually a bit weak. Flavor is very strange. Quite hot from the alcohol content and very floral in nature. More sweet caramel, roasted malts and fresh cut flowers. Body is a bit thin and does not have any real bitterness. Finishes dry and pasty with more "freshness". I think this brew need to age and mellow a bit like a good barleywine should.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, raisins, malt, earth, toffee and a bunch of alcohol. Medium-bodied; Decent complex flavour of malt, oak, vanilla and some pit fruits, but lacking a bit on depth and sweetness. Aftertaste shows a good malt vibe with some yeast notes, a hint of oak and dryness, but a lack in sweetness, alcohol and complexity on the finish, make for a decent barley wine at best. Overall, a beer that was decent, but not up to the expectations or potentials that it could be given the style and the brewery. Definitely passable if there are other options for you. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia on 05-February-2013 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on 02-March-2013.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled on draft at commercial taphouse. 2009 vintage. DAMN this is good! Probably the best starrhill beer Iíve ever had. Perfectly smooth and deliciously complex. Dark fruits, rum, berries, sweet alcohol with just the faintest hop bitterness on the tail end for a balanced finish. No heat. Very pleasing on all counts.
