Bottle from Caponeís and on draft at Caponeís. Bottled version rated here. Pours turbid thick deep blackish brackish brown with tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, pumpkin puree and spice, mild hops and popcorn butter. Tastes malty, with hints of cacao, pumpkin, allspice, and a medium palate. Overall good but not great.

Bottle from Bottle Revolution. I gave up on pumpkin beers a couple of autumns ago, but this one caught my interest. I canít remember seeing a pumpkin porter before. This actually works because the fuller bodied beer covers up the spices a little. So while there is plenty of cinnamon and pumpkin in the flavor, itís not overwhelming by any means. Itís on the lighter side of porters, but certainly full bodied enough. I might like it if it were roastier, but this is actually pretty pleasant.

KUEric (886) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - OCT 15, 2012
Pours a dark porter looking with a ever so slightly reddish tint to it (that could have been the dark red walls in the dark basement of Black Squirrel though) with a somewhat stiff foam head. The aroma was sweet and pumpkin pie-y, but the fla vor had a little more roasted/toasted/burtn malt to it than the nose did.

Pours a dark cola brown with a quickly-dissipating tan head. Aroma is light, sweet and malty. Flavor is quite spicy. Sweet cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Not quite as strong upon the swallow but still pretty decent.

Dark brown. Tan head. Aroma of pumpkin pie spice, roast, lactose, and cloves are heavily noticeable. Flavor has clove, spice, pumpkin, roast, lactose and a lightly tart note.

I was excited to try a pumpkin porter, because I really am not a fan of traditional pumpkin ales and I thought this approach might offer more depth and character. Unfortunately, I found the beer watery and thin, the spices didnít taste real, and I missed the punch of hops to get the fruit of the pumpkin across to me.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Chesapeake, VA. Cola-like brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of light floral hops, chocolate, and a trace of pumpkin pie spice. Pumpkin really barely appears to be present in the flavor. Mostly smoky malts, coffee, and dark chocolate are tasted but there is a slight sharpness from the pumpkin that I do detect. A decent beer.

Deep, rich malt comes out first in the aroma, chocolatey, roasted, complimented by the pumpkin, and a little bit of hop with a hint of mint. Light has a difficult time getting through the dark brown body, but it cracks clear red-orange to gold at the edges when held at an angle. I managed to get a pretty good tan head out of it, but less retention than I would have liked, and no lace. The flavor is understated at the front, but it does a bit of a dance in the middle. It drops off in the back end, leaving a bitter aftertaste that fades to sweet. Itís got a full almost creamy body with a good deal of carbonation. Itís unique among pumpkin beers, and commendable for that. I like most of the pieces, but somehow they just donít add up, and leave something to be desired.
