Boxcar Pumpkin Porter is a traditional English-style Brown Porter with pumpkin added to the mash. Light spicing allows the subtle flavors of pumpkin and roasty porter to shine through. Boxcar is a session beer at 5.2% and very drinkable.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a very dark brown color. A nicely creamy khaki-colored head of two fingers crowns the body well. It doesnít feature the best retention for the style, however thereís a nice patch of lacing down the side of the glass. S: This is heavy on the pumpkin ale qualities, light on the porter ones. And even the former isnít that impressive. Light pumpkin and spicing are the dominating notes - thereís little in the way of roasted malts, chocolate or coffee. Not bad, just rather unassuming. T: The flavor is much the same way - the only dark qualities that I can really taste is the clean, roasted dryness of the finish. Mild, generic spicing opens things up, before it finishes with a slight roasted flavor. This is bland, to the point where itís drinkable nature canít make up for it. M: Clean and dry on the finish...a quality thatís hampered by the slight heft of the body itself. Thatís the only real problem with the feel. Itís the boring flavor that harms drinkability more than anything. Carbonation isnít quite as blistering as some porters. O: This one just bores me. While thereís nothing wrong with it, thereís nothing that pops out as being impressive, either. Basically itís a middle of the road, please the masses kind of beer that simply isnít for me.

12oz bottle thanks to dmac. Pours a hazy deep dark brown color with a finger of fizzy tan head. Aromas of chocolate, sweet pumkin, caramel, and cinnamon. Thin mouthfeel. Taste is pumpkin seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark chocolate, and burnt malt.

12 Fl. Oz. bottle. Poured dark brown (almost black), off white head, quite foamy, lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of spices and roasted malts are dominant but there also some pumpkin in there too. Taste is also roasted malts a starts a bit sweet, but the characteristic sourness of a porter kicks in right away, spices are there and also the pumpkin but the are a bit faint (regrettably) but overall a nice solid beer.

12oz bottle from a 6er from Crossroads Spirits. Poured a good looking blackish/brown with a large frothy beige head. Aroma was really awesome, on first whiff I would have thought I was smelling some type of spiced muffin, notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, roasted pumpkin that combined with the dark malts really made me think of a carrot cake type muffin, very nice. Big full mouthfeel with foamy carbonation, a bit too big. Flavor sadly drops off big time from the awesome aroma. The spices are there but very muted, some medium toast and grains, a touch of light cinnamon and some wet bread. Overall this started great but did not hold up.

Aroma: Distinct pumpkin spice that stands above the porter backbone
Appearance: Opaque black with thin off-white head
Taste: Bubblegum, spice, dark chocolate
Palate: Medium body, good carbonation, slightly dry and bitter finish
Overall: Spice flavor is subdued in the flavor, but still a pleasant beer. Very drinkable, not overly spiced.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with effectively no head on it. Nose has a decent amount of pumpkin spiciness to it, but slightly darker than an average pumpkin ale. The roasting in both the nose and taste only come through subtly and secondary to the pumpkin. OK, but nothing notable to me.

Sixer from Harris Teeter. The pourís brown with a small off-white head. The aromaís general pumpkin spice. Moderate nutmeg, cinnamon. A bit of pumpernickel bread and caramel. The taste is more of the same. Tangy spiciness. Vanilla extract. Toasted brown bread. Light body, sort of watery. Active carbonation. Overall, decent.
