Starr Hill’s Dark Starr Stout has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, and with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, it packs a robust taste into a surprisingly light body. This signature brew pours like velvet and drinks like a slice of grandma’s pumpernickel bread.

This stout packed a wallop of flavor for only 4.75%! Very roasty flavor, a bit overmuch really, over shadowing some other elements of the beer. Notes of coffee and chocolate, but also bitter milk and grease.

12oz. Off-white head on top of a black body. Aroma is quite muted, some roasted, and a wet pile of leaves. Body is slightly roasted with a woodiness and the slightest sweetness turns this towards a bitter chocolate. I’m realizing more and more the dry stout style doesn’t have much for me.

12 fl oz bottle from dkachur (thanks!!), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Black with a tan head. Aroma: Lots of black coffee and dark, unsweetened chocolate, ashen, blackened malts, hints of herbal hops. Palate: Medium+ body, soft carbonation, a bit powdery-astringent. Flav.: Cardboard (lots), some of the black coffee of the nose, not much else going on; tangy and a little bit of bitterness to finish, flinty.

A bit stark, but drinkable.

Dry smell, leather, touch of yeast and fruit sourness. Taste is fizzy, slightly roasted, malty club soda. Not very good.

Nice deep black coloured body with a frothy tan head. Aroma of fresh hops up front with some roasted malt and a nice bit of caramel - very nice in the nose! Medium-bodied; Sharp roasty flavours with coffee and nuts coming out, but the hops are still definitely there. Aftertaste also shows some good malty tastes and a light sweetness. Overall, a very nice well-rounded stout that would be definitely recommended. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 05-April-2008.

Bottle from dkachur, thanks! Almost black and opague. Milky, roasty aroma with apple syrup. Thin. Roast flavor with apple. Inoffensive but nothing special.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2009 Bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Jet black with a very large head, long retention and awesome lacing. Aroma is roasty, mocha and metal. Taste is coffee, chocolate and mint with a nice hop bitterness. Aftertaste is a bit off.

Poured out of a bottle. Dark black with a large creamy tan head. Body is very light for a stout. It has a strong hoppy aftertaste. I would never have known it was dispensed with Nitrogen until reading the commercial description.
