Starr Hill’s Dark Starr Stout has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, and with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, it packs a robust taste into a surprisingly light body. This signature brew pours like velvet and drinks like a slice of grandma’s pumpernickel bread.

Dry smell, leather, touch of yeast and fruit sourness. Taste is fizzy, slightly roasted, malty club soda. Not very good.

Nice deep black coloured body with a frothy tan head. Aroma of fresh hops up front with some roasted malt and a nice bit of caramel - very nice in the nose! Medium-bodied; Sharp roasty flavours with coffee and nuts coming out, but the hops are still definitely there. Aftertaste also shows some good malty tastes and a light sweetness. Overall, a very nice well-rounded stout that would be definitely recommended. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 05-April-2008.

Bottle from dkachur, thanks! Almost black and opague. Milky, roasty aroma with apple syrup. Thin. Roast flavor with apple. Inoffensive but nothing special.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2009 Bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Jet black with a very large head, long retention and awesome lacing. Aroma is roasty, mocha and metal. Taste is coffee, chocolate and mint with a nice hop bitterness. Aftertaste is a bit off.

Poured out of a bottle. Dark black with a large creamy tan head. Body is very light for a stout. It has a strong hoppy aftertaste. I would never have known it was dispensed with Nitrogen until reading the commercial description.

After having quite a few Imperial Stouts, it was nice to finally have a stout that I could drink and not start feeling the effects almost immediately. The beverage pours an extremely dark brown-black. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is coffee, roasted malts, and a slight hint of chocolate. It’s not extraordinary, but I sure did enjoy it.

Nose of smoked charred grains, with a taste that follows suit. Their is a hint of mild sweet milk chocolate that really hits home on this one. The bitterness at the end really is the right volume on this beer. Definately not over the top. If their is a weakness to this beer it is a bit overcarbonated, but this is a nicely done beer.

Bottle poured a clear brownish black with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, light chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of coffee, roasted malt and light vanilla with a smooth dry lingering roasty finish. Not bad, but pretty one dimensional beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a standard pint glass. Middle of the road stout. Aroma is mostly coffee and some hop. Pours very dark brown with minimal tan head that quickly dissipates completely. Taste is coffee, with sourness present at the end of the taste. Medium to light body. Okay beer but nothing to shout about.
