Originally reviewed: 11/16/08. Pours a jet black with a good-sized two-finger head. No light coming through this one. Excellent retention and lacing. Nice rings on the glass.
Smells of espresso, chocolate, and some alcohol. Almost a beef scent coming out? Kinda weird.
Nice taste for a stout. Chocolately and with a touch of alcohol. Some nice roasted flavor coming out. Pretty good.
Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Not bad for a stout. Again, I am pleasantly surprised with the offerings from Starr Hill.

Total Wine & More, Fairfax 12oz: Pours a blackish color with a small brownish head. Aroma is lightly of chocolate, a hint of smoke, and roasted malts. Pretty easy drinking stout, which doesn’t try to get too intense and stays pretty simple. Tiny bit of sweetness and chocolate. Nice body. Not bad. I regret not trying the Jameson-aged version of this when I had the chance. Also, ’tis nice to see another Grateful Dead influenced beer.

Burnt malt and coffee flavors are mildly present, but there is something going on at the back end that is a little bit of a surprise. Kind of a buttered, crusty, yeasty bread finish.

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Roasted malty aroma with some lighter nutty sweetness. The flavor has dry roasted malts, lightly burnt grains, a touch of nutty sweetness, and some earthy notes. Pretty good.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 mattyb83 (733) - Minnesota, USA - JAN 27, 2012
Bottle via trade with bobertkeukn. Dark and black in color with a small khaki head. This is the darkest non-imperial stout I’ve seen. Really impressive looking. Aroma is light roast coffee and dark chocolate. Fairly simple, but really well done. Light body. A little bit of roast coffee, some chocolate, a touch smokey in the finish, and quite dry. This has what seems like a fruity component to the flavor as well. Nice. Pretty easy drinking. If you’re looking for a lighter bodied stout that you can drink, like, 37 of in a sitting than this beer would be for you.
