COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Starr Hill’s Dark Starr Stout has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, and with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, it packs a robust taste into a surprisingly light body. This signature brew pours like velvet and drinks like a slice of grandma’s pumpernickel bread.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2011 Bottle. Poured a deep dark murky black with a small (less than 1 finger) creamy light brown foamy head that was fully diminishing and had fair lacing. The aroma was very, very mild of dark roasted malts, a mild resin hop and a sweet leathery yeast with a tinge of coffee, toffee and dark chocolate. It tasted bitter-sweet initially with a note of dark chocolate and finished with a mild hoppy flavor and had a mild coffee note at the end that left the flavor lasting only a short while. Mouthfeel was light to medium bodied and definitely had a watery feel to it yet was slightly dry in texture with a flat carbonation. Overall an OK brew, but not much to offer for a Stout. A little light in body and flavor for my liking.

Pours dark brown and cloudy, small frothy head and short-lived lacing. Licorice aroma, but bitter dark chocolate on the buds. I like this beer.

Bottle: Nearly black with some deep-brown shining through the very top, capped with a thick, beige head that leaves nice lacing behind. Aroma is too mild... Some roasted/toasted grain & malt with a nebulous, non-fitting fruity note of faint white grapes & raisins... Strange. Taste has roasted malt, light brown sugar & some toffee, but there’s a strange, almost tangy dark fruit presence that doesn’t really fit. Raisin, black currant, but almost too tangy & tart without a big enough dark-malty presence to account for it. Hint of burnt wood chips in the aftertaste. Weird stout, not my favorite.

12oz bottle from Manahawkin Spirits. Pours a dark brown/almost black cool with a small frothy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malt, ash, caramel, and a light nuttiness. Taste ashtray, burnt malts, caramel, and nutshells. Mouthfeel is thin and watery.

Molasses, nuts, and some spice in the aroma. Bready, nutty flavor with some roast coffee bitterness in the finish. Tasty and easy drinking--I liked this a lot better than I expected given the other ratings I saw.

I enjoy a good dry stout, but this is not one of them. Very thin, watery like chocolate or coffee flavorings to offset the astringent bitterness.

Bottle. Pours a black color with off white head. Sweet, roasted, slight nutty aromas. Dry, roasty, slight ash flavors. A somewhat mediocre stout.

Pitch black in the glass with aromas of toast, chocolate malt and cookie. Lots of coffee on the palate, with a light and short finish. A hint of sweetness, but most of the malts are a bit beery to really make the most of the rich coffee element of the flavor profile.
