3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Part of my 40 beers for turning 40 gift. Matt, you rock!!! Pours a crystal clear dark mahogany with a moderate tan head. Aroma of grapes and plums mixed with alcohol. Taste is sweet with a bit of lager smoothness. Notes if raisin and grape with a slight sour note before it's replaced with a slightly bitter drying finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, courtesy of nimbleprop – thanks! Pours a deep chestnut color with a light ring of tan head. No real lacing to speak of. Nose is light on the esters, some bubblegum, wheat, and yeast. Transitions well into the taste; more emphasis on the wheat and yeast. A faint bit of chocolate. Good.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a small fizzy off-white head. The nose is sweet malt with a dark caramel sweetness. The flavor is fairly sweet as well, fairly well lagged and clean with a lingering sweet finish. Medium bodied with a sturdy malt backbone and a touch of clinginess. A light hint of alcohol on the finish. An OK Doppelbock.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Not a typical dopplebock. Interesting complexity with hint of winter spice blend. Very light on the palate. I would have liked better with heavier mouthfeel.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Soil and toasted unmalted barley nose. Clear ruby brown, medium yellow head. Sweet unmalted barley and horse hair. Medium body, alcohol insistent. Doppelbocks are one of my least favorite styles, but I dislike this even more than most. It’s still better than a macro pale lager.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Slightly hazy, muddied ruby and violet tinted deep brown body with a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of nuts, earth, caramel, oak, toffee and a bit of cardboard. Full-bodied; Deep earthy, malty and very nutty flavours up front with some pecans and peanut butter right afterwards, followed by some lighter earthy and caramel bite and finishing sweet. Aftertaste shows some good complexity with the nuts and caramelised sugars battling it out for supremacy. Overall, a good complex beer that is very deep and strong, but the depth of flavours and intensity is a bit too much. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Bailey’s Crossroads (Falls Church), Virginia on 21-November-2013 for US$1.59 sampled at home in Washington on 07-January-2014.

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Decent winter brew. High alcohol content bumped this rating up a little. A good beer to sit in and watch the snow fall by. Starr Hill has a fairly impressive line up

Bottle from a mix 6 from bottle run. A gritty and dirty texture. Bit of caramel and toasty grain. Nutty caramel and toffee aroma. Ok.
