UPDATED: DEC 4, 2013 Rerating this from a bottle because I liked it before and all my friends say it sucks, so maybe my palate was off when I first had it or something. Pours a clear dark brown with a medium sized fizzy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee, raisin, a bit of chocolate and a mild metallic note. The taste is chocolate, raisin, toffee and a bit of soy. Medium bodied, low carbonation. 6/3/6/3/12

Draft at the VA Craft Brewers Festival, Devils Backbone, 8/24/13. Pours a hazy brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee, nuts, herbal hops. The taste is toffee, caramel, nuts, mild chocolate, herbal hops. Medium bodied. 6/3/7/4/14

Draft at Park Lane Tavern. Dark, ruby brown. Dreamy consistency with a nice smooth malt character. Roasty and caramel flavor components. Very clean and drinkable, not heavy at all. Well done. (#5340, 11/2013)

kramer (4857) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 26, 2014
Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a small fizzy off-white head. The nose is sweet malt with a dark caramel sweetness. The flavor is fairly sweet as well, fairly well lagged and clean with a lingering sweet finish. Medium bodied with a sturdy malt backbone and a touch of clinginess. A light hint of alcohol on the finish. An OK Doppelbock.

Slightly hazy, muddied ruby and violet tinted deep brown body with a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of nuts, earth, caramel, oak, toffee and a bit of cardboard. Full-bodied; Deep earthy, malty and very nutty flavours up front with some pecans and peanut butter right afterwards, followed by some lighter earthy and caramel bite and finishing sweet. Aftertaste shows some good complexity with the nuts and caramelised sugars battling it out for supremacy. Overall, a good complex beer that is very deep and strong, but the depth of flavours and intensity is a bit too much. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Bailey’s Crossroads (Falls Church), Virginia on 21-November-2013 for US$1.59 sampled at home in Washington on 07-January-2014.

12 ounce bottle thanks to ygtbsm94. Black pour. Tan head.Slight chocolate sweetness. Creamy. Light body. Not a big beer taste wise. Drinkable.

Soil and toasted unmalted barley nose. Clear ruby brown, medium yellow head. Sweet unmalted barley and horse hair. Medium body, alcohol insistent. Doppelbocks are one of my least favorite styles, but I dislike this even more than most. It’s still better than a macro pale lager.

Dark brown with a thin head. The aroma is caramel and bread, lots of grains. The flavor is like oat meal with brown sugar. Nice finish, dry and toasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, courtesy of nimbleprop – thanks! Pours a deep chestnut color with a light ring of tan head. No real lacing to speak of. Nose is light on the esters, some bubblegum, wheat, and yeast. Transitions well into the taste; more emphasis on the wheat and yeast. A faint bit of chocolate. Good.

Bottle from a mix 6 from bottle run. A gritty and dirty texture. Bit of caramel and toasty grain. Nutty caramel and toffee aroma. Ok.
