bottle, from a friend. Clear yellow colour, small white head. Hoppy nose. Medium-bodied, shy grainy-malty base with some dry hop flavours and a touch of dust.

2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours clear dark yellow, some head, not much. Smells like grain - I swear it’s not a non-alcohol, I checked the label, even though it’s in Cyrillic! Taste is slight syrup with malts, and a pinch of alcohol at the end. After a few really crappy Russian beers this one isn’t so bad, but it also isn’t so great.

2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: JUN 24, 2011 Bottle. Pours a clear, light golden color with a large but quickly dissipating foamy head. Not much aroma -- a bit of sweet malt and some cardboard. Flavor is better: a surprisingly rich malt flavor with (almost) enough hoppiness to balance it out. Short, bitter finish. Kind of creamy on the tongue. Fairly boring, but above average for an Eastern European pale lager. And in a cool barrel-shaped bottle to boot.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Can brewed 04082008. Thanks to Russian friends, who brought this from Petroskoi. Brewed by Amstar in Ufa? "Iz Bochonka" means "from barrel", so this is kind of "Melnik Draught". Pale yellow color, decent white head. Very grassy aroma, light buttery malty notes. Quite malty, a bit sweetish with dominant grassy hoppyness. Some alcoholic and grainy bitterness in the aftertaste. Despite of fancy name, this is a normal pale lager, but this is not totally hopeless as it has some hops and malty flavor. Flavor may vary as this is propably brewed in many places.

1.6 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottled (thanks SADESA!). Golden colour, mediumsized foamy off-white head. Aroma is malts, some grains, slight sugary notes on the side of the malts. Also some rubber. Flavour is malts, hops, mild notes of rubber. Also a slight citrusfruity tone to it. Aroma wasn’t so good, but flavour is surprisingly clean.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Thanks to Kari and Elisabeth for bringing a 500ml can back from Arkhangelsk. Light golden body colour with a slowly fading, chalky head. Pale malty aroma. Grainy flavour with some citrus refreshness. Rather short finish. Crisp. Soft carbonation. Standard lager (at home in Tromsø, 19.10.2008).

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle - 500ml. Golden body with thick white foamy head. Fair malty/hoppy aroma with some herbal hints. Hoppy taste lacks complexity and ends with a short bitter finish. Not impressive, but at least the bottle is nice.
