3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: APR 7, 2014 10 oz at the brewery. Pours a brilliant, clear red with a small white head. The aroma is nicely smokey. Iíve always liked cherry wood. It imparts solid meaty smoke, yet also has a distinct fruity sweetness to it. It works very well with the biscuity hints and gentle hopping on this red. The flavors is a little smokier than their golden ale, which is good. I could use a little more though. Impeccably clean palate with a medium-light mouthfeel carries a simple, biscuity malt profile made more satisfying with hints at smoked meats and even light grassy notes.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at the brewery. Mostly clear brick red with a short off-white head. Aroma is earthy and game-y with notes of red apple, crystal malt, must, subtle ash, soil, manure, and peat. Medium-light bodied, lightly sweet, somewhat astringent and slightly sour in the finish, unsmoked malt is basic caramel and toasted grain. Smoked malt is more evident in the mouth, where itís lightly astringent, almost brine-like, ashy in the way of campfire smoke.

Tap at the brewery - clear amber - must like their smoked golden, this is a fairly simplistic beer that seems designed to allow the cherrywood smoke to be showcased - the problem is that the cherrywood smoke lacks the heartiness, depth, and complexity of beechwood or oak, so the beer just turns out kind of boring - a little sweet, a little bitter, a little smoky - thatís it - not bad, just bland.
