benwa420 (32), Aspen, Colorado, USA Feb 15, 2007 Not a bad little light lager. Light yellow color and white head. Smooth golden beer. Good beer for a newbie in microbrews to move them in slowly. hopdog (4444), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 11, 2006 12oz bottle. Poured a lighter and clear yellow color with a large sized white head. Aromas and tastes of grain, lemons and light grass. Thinner and somewhat watery body. jcwattsrugger (3757), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Oct 31, 2006 on tap-pours a foamy white head and yellow color. Aroma is sweet, grassy. Taste is light grain, sweet, grassy, secondary flat hops. Mild/OK carbonation, good for a light. Bockyhorsey (1920), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 5, 2006 12 oz. Bottle. Slight lemon zesty aroma. Clear golden body with white disipating head. Zesty and somewhat stale malt for flavor. Mild bitterness more like a swill lager. Now I know why I don’t drink too many light beers.. FlacoAlto (2039), Tucson, Arizona, USA Sep 14, 2006 Best Before Date Oct 2006, Sampled September 2006
When poured vigorously it forms a three finger thick, pale white colored head that has some staying power to it. The beer is a brilliantly clear gold color that has a touch of visual carbonation to it (perhaps I poured too vigorously). Aromas of sweet grain waft to my nose as I pour this beer and upon further inspection this seems to be the dominant note. A dry grainy note is here, as well as a grassy, slightly herbal hop note. The aroma is fairly light, but much more well balanced, hoppy and apparent than say a typical macro light lager.
Briskly chilly, the beer starts out with a sweet grain note and a hop bite, but the first sip fades away quite quickly on the palate. At this temperature this has a bit of a bite to it; it is a combination of carbonation and hops. The hops, while used with a light hand, are distinct and in addition to the bitterness provide some nice hop flavors to counterpoint the clean malt profile. a combination of sweet malt and grassy hop notes linger on in the finish; just lightly dusting the palate with the beers passing.
With a name like Light Lager, I really want to not like this beer, but it is really well crafted. It is nicely balanced between malt and hop. The hops, perhaps, just dominate, and of course this level of hops would never be allowed in a macro lager, much less macro light lager. Not to mention that this has a really nice, clean malt character to it; I would be hard pressed to say that there were any adjuncts used in this beer, which isn’t that a prerequisite for a Light Lager. All in all this is a nice refreshing beer, that I am tempted to say is being wrongly named. It certainly does not fit that standard definition of a light lager.
