Bold and complex from a tremendous amount of roasted malts, yet smooth and rich from the addition of oats. Dissent has its own opinion of what a dark beer should be.

22oz bottle from Atom via Free Beer Week, thanks Adam! Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is smooth dark chocolates and roasts with some molasses, a bit of a milky chocolate sweetness, and a light anise. Flavor is roasty and smooth up front with a nice dark chocolate and slight milk chocolate sweetness. A bit of a molasses sweetness and a touch of dark fruits before the roasts become somewhat ashy and this finishes pretty dry with a light bitterness, but balanced enough with some chocolates offering a medium-light sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid stout. Big roasts that get pretty ashy and dry, but a nice chocolate and slight molasses sweetness to keep things balanced. Enjoyable.

Growler from kbutler1. Huge thanks Kevin! Pours black with a half finger of thick tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate with huge Roasty notes and a decent bit of dark fruit. Taste is light bitter and follows aroma. Loads of coffee and chocolate. Full bodied with a thick creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, awesome. 650 ml bottle courtesy of kbutler. Thanks. Pours a black-brown color with a small tan head that has good retention. The aroma is mild and features raisins, burnt grains, mocha and musty soil. The flavor is much more complex than the nose; I get dark fruits, burnt toast, chestnuts, bitter walnuts, dark chocolate, a bit of spice and earthy hops. The palate is full, smooth and viscous with soft carbonation. Finishes medium in duration and dry with lingering spice. Overall: The complete lack of any sweetness is a welcome change. Very tasty ale, much enjoyed.
