COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
LUNKER is an English barleywine which was aged in Templeton Rye Whisky barrels – which was the favorite spirit of mobster Al Capone. The aroma and flavor have a subtle rye whisky character followed by caramel, toffee, vanilla and toasted bread notes. The rich full bodied character and sweetness of Lunker is tempered by the moderate bitterness of this glorious brew. Drink now or keep it in the cellar for several years – Capone did both, except his cellar was Alcatraz. It’s hinted with his flavor of choice, making Lunker a choice brew — and just a little bit GANGSTER!

Bottle... Murky brown pour with no head. The aroma is a collage of caramel, rye whiskey, oak and damp leather. Full-bodied, but a bit watery with lazy carbonation. The flavor is a nicely balanced pairing of caramelized malts and rye whisky. Neither terribly sweet nor overly boozy. Nice, warming, moderately sweet, caramel and toffee finish. Bottle courtesy of Bvery!

Bottle, who knows how old. pour is a murky brown orange mix that looks like a barley wine, nose is heavy on the barrel with good amounts of vanilla that I find enjoyable. After a few years this is still a sweet beer, but its satisfying in its depth and makes for a real treat.

750 courtesy of Mike G. at Falco242’s tasting. Murky dark brown body with an engine oil consistency. Wonderfully rich, complex b-wine that has nearly perfect balance. Considerable hops but by no means a hop bomb. Somehow this one had not yet reached my radar and was probably the king of the tasting among an incredible lineup. Another world class offering from Steel Toe.

750mL bottle. Poured deep burgundy with a smoked, darker golden head. The aroma picked up rich darker fruits, aged caramel, molasses, and a hefty dose of peppery rye whiskey.. quite a bit of booze was evident, but no more than the ABV suggested.. toasty oak rounded it out nicely. The flavor was anchored by warm, aged caramel and molasses.. peppery rye whiskey and related alcohol heat laced throughout.. oak and vanilla on the back-end.. a tad hotter than I wanted, but solid. Heavy-bodied with low-moderate carbonation.. spicy and aggressive, with a bit too much kick.

Bottle generously shared by Dave. Aroma is fresh peanut brittle, toffee, light belgian chocolate and rye. Pours hazel brown with very light lacing. Taste is sweet with caramel, toffee, biscuit, rye whiskey, and nuts. Not a lot of hop characteristic, just nutty sweet delicious malts. Very yummy and easy to drink. Did NOT taste 14%.

Year aged bottle. It has the perfect, opaque chestnut hue, belying its age and depth. Tobacco, templeton, figs and raisins in the aroma. Total malt hedonism.

Flavor brims luxuriously with velvety, polished malt flavor. The touch of barrel is soft, but assured, and with the gentle heat of the high alcohol this beer becomes a grand, top shelf spirit like experience.

The body is so full as to be port-like, even bordering on cognac or benedictine. A quick hit of drying nuttiness before a long, caressing finish.

750ml bottle shared by jcwatts on a totally uneventful tasting night, nothing much happened huh John??? Poured a slight muddy brown with a small tight foamy beige head. Aroma is sweet, notes of caramel, molasses, toffee, dry vanilla candy, some oak, and booze. Syrupy body that is big and bold with softer carbonation, heat and a lingering aftertaste. Flavor is the same as the aroma. This is a good beer, but what would one expect it is from Mighty Minnesota.
