COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
LUNKER is an English barleywine which was aged in Templeton Rye Whisky barrels – which was the favorite spirit of mobster Al Capone. The aroma and flavor have a subtle rye whisky character followed by caramel, toffee, vanilla and toasted bread notes. The rich full bodied character and sweetness of Lunker is tempered by the moderate bitterness of this glorious brew. Drink now or keep it in the cellar for several years – Capone did both, except his cellar was Alcatraz. It’s hinted with his flavor of choice, making Lunker a choice brew — and just a little bit GANGSTER!

Just not my style of beer, but still glad to snag a couple of bottles of this. Pours a dark brown with mid-sized, thick head that very slowly dissipates. Aromas include sweet malt, ripe fruit, booze/liquor, some woodsy notes, and caramel and coffee. Flavor is very sweet with quite a noticeable liquor flavor/element to it. At first, I was tasting some licorice, then caramel, vanilla, rye whiskey, and toffee. Very smooth with a long-lasting finish. Think I’ll let my second bottle age a bit more...

On tap at their taproom. Overall, lots of barrel characteristics in this! The rye does shine through adds a nice malty and comfortable alcohol feel. For 14.4% this is easy to drink. What a balanced and great tasting Barleywine. With age this would shine.

Aroma: toast, lots of caramel and toffee, nice vanilla notes, some spirits layered in, somewhat sweet. Appearance: pours a fairly dark copper color with ruby hues, a touch of khaki head. Taste: rich caramel and dark sugars, fairly sweet with some bitterness and warming alcohol to balance, toast, bready malts, some oak and whiskey, hints of dark fruit, sweet but not overly so. Palate: full body, low carbonation, smooth texture. Overall: an excellent, complex barley wine.

750ml, thanks Bvery! Pours reddish brown with an off-white head that fades to a ring. Aroma is big time molasses, booze, dark fruit, brown sugar, and fig. This hides the 14.4% very well. Taste is bourbon, brown sugar, fig, over-ripe fruit and toffee. Very tasty and quite warming. Delicious and dangerously drinkable.

750ml bottle from Atom, thanks Adam! Pours a very deep brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy and frothy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is sweeter caramels, dark fruits, rye whiskey, and a light toasted wood. Some toffees, a light bread, and hints of vanilla. Flavor is similar. Smooth, sweeter caramels with some toffee bread up front as well as a nice rye spice, a good amount of dark fruits, and a pleasant whiskey note. Some vanilla, touches of toasty coconut, and a nice woodiness that helps dry this out with some rye in the finish as well. A light warmth before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Full body and a soft, light carbonation. Overall, a really solid barley wine. Big and malty, but well balanced from the barrel aging with a nice rye whiskey and woody element. Glad to have the chance to try this one.

Bottle pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is very candy like, candy corn, caramel, and toffee. Taste similar to aroma with with vanilla and bitter rye whiskey on the finish. Nice stuff.
