COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
LUNKER is an English barleywine which was aged in Templeton Rye Whisky barrels – which was the favorite spirit of mobster Al Capone. The aroma and flavor have a subtle rye whisky character followed by caramel, toffee, vanilla and toasted bread notes. The rich full bodied character and sweetness of Lunker is tempered by the moderate bitterness of this glorious brew. Drink now or keep it in the cellar for several years – Capone did both, except his cellar was Alcatraz. It’s hinted with his flavor of choice, making Lunker a choice brew — and just a little bit GANGSTER!

Bottle:   Very dark, deep brown, burnt brown sugar hues, thin foamy beige head, little lacing.   Huge graham cracker, rye, whiskey, woody nose, with hints of caramel, toffee, burnt brown sugar, vanilla, and dark chocolate.   On the tongue its equally complex, and smooth too.   Not cloying, not thin, just perfect.   The 14.4% ABV is shockingly easy to drink.   Don’t get me wrong, it is very warming, but its not burning or alcoholic.   Very clean, and very English like in that its on the malty side.   Hops are... well, who cares, this is sweet, malty, with all the whiskey like aromas and flavors that you want in a whiskey barrel aged Barley Wine.   So smooth, so easy to drink, just wonderful.   Big thanks to Skyview for sending this gem my way!   Thanks Bob!!!

Bottle from thomashall. Dark mahogany with a creamy light tan head. Sweet and boozy with some vanilla, toffee, light oak, plums, booze soaked raisins, mild carbonation and full bodied, quite sweet, boozy and dark fruit finish with a bit more oak coming through on the finish.

25.4 oz bottle. Murky brown with brief froth. Nose is caramel, raisin, soft whiskey and wood. Medium body with a soft buzz. Taste is whiskey butterscotch, apple, grass and bittersweet chocolate. The rye and roast overwhelm the delicate sweetness.

Bottle thanks to Rainer. Pours a cloudy dark brown with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong rye, bourbon, wood, vanilla. Medium mouth, strong whiskey, rye, dark fruit, very hot.

Keg @ Steel Toe. Deep reddish brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma is rich, fat and sweet. Caramel covered plum, candied cherry. Toffee. Mellow accents of vanilla. Flavor of smooth, sweet cereal. Toast. Caramel and forest fruits. Nicely balanced, eminently drinkable. Fat and oily. Great.

(bottle) Having this as a birthday beer. This is the 2015 bottling which clocks in at 13.5%. Pours a muddy reddish-brown with a tan head that quickly disappears. Aroma right off of the bat is a big bomb of barrel, with charred wood, oak, and vanilla. There are also underlying scents of dark fruit with a bit of a Red Vines vibe going on. Once the beer warms more, the aroma flips to being more dark fruit prominent. I’m getting a good amount of dried cherries and some plum here with just an undertone of barrel. This is definitely an improvement. Flavor also has an abundant dose of plum with a prominent toffee character emerging towards the finish which is accompanied by the barrel. With further warming, I get a little hit of bananas foster (weird). The barrel gets a little rough towards the finish with a little peek of char that’s mixed with the booze and it doesn’t taste all that pleasant. The mouthfeel does get a bit sticky. Overall a pretty solid BA barleywine, which just serves to perpetuate Steel Toe’s reputation of producing consistently good beers.

bomber - aged 1.5 years. still not a fan of this style but I think I like the English (non hop) versions better. Got a vinous/sherry in aroma followed by toffee and dark fruits. no carbonation. nice mahogany color. Taste similar to aroma with some alcohol. Much going on, not my style

Bottle: Thanks, Scott. Two years old, I think? Dark, murky brown pour with almost no head. Big aroma of whiskey, dates, prunes, caramel, light papery oxidation, mild anise, a touch of smoke. Sweet flavor; very sweet. Lots of residual sugars. Brown sugar, dates, caramel, candied prunes, some strong whiskey and black cherry undertones lingering in the finish. Woody with a hint of charred cocoa & oxidation. Not bad.
