5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
UPDATED: MAR 6, 2014 3-6-14 re-rate: 750ml bottle. Felt the need to re-rate this so soon as I have come to the conclusion that this beer is far better than I originally gave it credit for and far better than my fellow Ratebeerians would seem to suggest. I like this better than Hopslam and better than Abrasive, recognizing that this is technically a subtly different style. Liquid gold and perhaps my new favorite beer on the planet. 1-17-14:Draft at brewery. Fresh, sweet, fruity hop aroma that reminds me a bit of Hopslam. Slightly hazy amber although tough to tell in the dim light of the bar. Excellent off white head and lace. Really excellent brew that is not dissimilar to Hopslam. Call it a poor man’s Hopslam although that is said in the most complimentary way. Steel Toe’s best beer, also said in the most complimentary way. 10, 4,9,5,18

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is citrus, orange, pine, and grapefruit. Flavor is citrus up front then I get orange peel, pine, grapefruit, and tropical fruit. Actually pretty juicy for being so hoppy.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Terrific pour at the brewery taproom. Clings well to the glass with a dark orange hue. Aggressive aroma trains you to think hops but as it’s a double ipa kicks you in the face with initial alcohol sweetness. Alcohol is prevalent in the taste but balanced well with citrus flavors. A solid representation falling just short of the Dissent as Steel Toe’s strongest offering.

10 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s tap room. Consumed on 5-18-13. Pleasant, fresh, hoppy aroma features lemon scent. Pours a great, bright orange/brass/gold color. Very good lacing. Superb, citrus-y, double IPA taste; can’t ask for much more from a double IPA. Great, dry finish. Very good, heavy palate. Highly enjoyable beer.

Light bronze pour with small white head. Aroma and flavor is big on pine and resin. Light carbonation. Very tasty, easy to drink for 11%. I’d put this up there with some of the west coast big IPA’s I’ve had

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 vintage. Pours a copper-amber, with massive, pillowy head. Floral, hop aroma, with some citrus, some bread. Flavor is amazingly balanced: there’s the expected citrus hop bite, but there’s also a lot of underlying malt sweetness, so that neither side overwhelms the other. An outstanding double IPA (although the bottle indicates it’s a triple!).

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Beautiful copper/orange hue and creamy thin head. I was expecting a full on bitterness barrage but was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was. Still, plenty of hop happiness with a slight pine aroma...and a great buzz! This is a big beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled on draught at the brewery in St Louis Park, MN. Pours a clear bright copper orange colored brew with a thick beige head that has some nice retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, tart apple, caramel and toffee malt, a hint of spice and some light raisin. Taste is full bodied, soft carbonation with excellent balanced flavors of grapefruit, tart apple, caramel malt, some light toffee and a hint of alcohol. Finish is quite smooth and semi-sweet with a medium hop bitterness followed by some light raisin, tart apple and caramel malt aftertaste. The extra caramel body hides most of the higher alcohol and not overly hopped so that you can not appreciate the caramel malt flavor. A terrific double IPA sipper. Allow this one to age a year and this double IPA will develop a barley wine profile with some citrus hop flavors. Excellent first special release from Steel Toe and well worth the trip.
