blankboy (2617), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 1, 2008 Bottle (341ml) courtesy of GregClow. As ’Steelback Premium Lager’. Apparently the Steelback products are better now? I hope so as they were pretty dire in the past. Pours a clear gold with a small somewhat-lasting white head. Mild aroma of grain, pale malt, canned corn and some sweetness -- not awesome by any means but not foul like Steelback products of old. Flavour’s the same: grainy with pale malt, corny, some sweetness and even some very faint hops in the finish. Again, nothing awful about the taste which is a definite step-up. Average bodied. If this beer is representative of the whole Steelback line then there’s no question that the products have indeed improved -- so if you’re going for buck-a-beer, you probably won’t get any better then this. For me though, I’ll pass. matt7215 (578), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Aug 30, 2008 341 ml bottle labled as Steelback premium Lager. 5% abv. purchased at the beer store. a hefty haul of emptys made this a free 6er, actually i even got $2.05 back after getting this free. pours golden with a short-lived white head. aromas of pale lager malts. to the nose it doesnt seem to be totally made from garbage. complete lack of hops. flavour: slightly sweet, pale lager malt, no hops. this brew has a decent amount of flavour and what i can taste doesnt taste bad. add some hops and this could push the boundaries of a 3. thats mighty high for a steelback mabel (1662), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 20, 2008 [1579-20080810] Tap. Grainy gross toasted yeast aroma. Clear, pale orange body with a quick foamy white bubbly head. Grainy toast flavour also hints at yeast. Light-medium body. Poor.
(@ TFOB 2008; Toronto, ON) GregClow (2351), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 5, 2008 Re-rating based on version from relaunched Steelback: Golden colour that is darker than most macro lagers, but still on the light side, with a small white head. Aroma of grainy malt, very light toasted note, a moderate sweetness. Thin mouthfeel, fairly low carbonation. Mild flavour of grain and grass, with hops in the finish that are light but noticeable. Very clean and refreshing, this is a simple but well-made mainstream lager.
Old rating based on the original version: It is what it is... the putrid ass-juice of the hounds of Hell. [1/1/1/1/1 - 0.5] tupalev (2311), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 29, 2008 Bottle, part of the re-launch of 5 Steelback beers under new ownership. Light yellow (maybe lighter than the Light Lager??), very small white head, some streaming bubbles. Soapy, grainy aroma, quite mild. Taste has a little more flavour than the light - somewhat sweet and lightly hopped. Mouthfeel is medium for the style and not nearly as carbonated as the light. This is not something I would reach for every again - there is simply not enough flavour here - but it is better than a macro lager and it is clean and not off-putting.
