This is an imported, lower-strength, cask version of the authentic Belgian abbey ale, brewed on behalf of St Peter’s Abbey, in memory of its founder St Arnold, the patron saint of brewers. The beer’s full and slightly smoky yeast aroma leads to a highly distinctive, spicy flavour, created by the use of ‘gruut’ – a mixture of spices typical of the nearby city of Bruges. Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW - London. Pours clear gold with a fine, creamy white head. Sugary and doughy pale malts in the aroma. Big sweet flavor with lots of sugar, pinepple, mango and banana. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sticky sweet to finish with more sugary dough, lots more pineapple and banana. Very sweet but still fairly easygoing stuff.

An orange-yellow coloured beer with a frothy but weak white head. A wheat beer like aroma, clove spice is matched with banana and pineapple. Dry mouthfeel. A zesty taste, all of the elements come through from the aroma, the spice is lighter, allowing the zestiness of the fruit to become more dominant. There is a slightly winey flavour that is noticeable in the finish. Tasted at the Salamander, Bath, Somerset. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask version of this famous beer, lower abv too. Agreed with ChrisO that this was a valid entry. Crosse Keys. Clear gold beer, little white head. Light palate, a little crisp. Clean malt - vaguely lagerish. Nice balancing orange citrus with mild banana ester spicing things up. Finishes semi dry. All right.
