330 ml bottle bought at Craftissmo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Cloudy hazy rubybrown colour with thin trace of yeast sediments; Half finger head and crumpety off-white foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing with notable small carbonation; Light aroma of malt, with vanilla, sugar, light banana, caramel, light orange peels, Bel yeast and light spices; Mid to light sweet taste of malt, with sharp spikes of metallic, banana oil, caramel, light molasses, hint of citrus peels, light Bel yeast, light herbs and faint grass; Mid to light body, thin and slick palate; Mouth feel is pretty thin-bodied dark ale, initially muted for a couple of seconds before a rush of awkward and chemical-like tastes including banana oil, metallic and citrus-peels. Sweetness is very low as it warms, and all other tastes like Bel yeast, gruit and herbal are pretty lightweight. Weird… Hoppiness / gruitiness is orange peels and light spicy nose, citrus-like peels, and fairly light herbal taste. Minimal bitterness, just light herbal finish; Fairly dry after taste. Very easy to mouth.

Comments: This one feels like a Dubbel experiment gone off the rail - thin body, good looking colour, head and lacing, smallish nose, awkward and chemical-ish ester taste, Bel yeast and the advertised gruit are just small touch. Not quite a failure, but I am not impressed. Won’t try again.

750 ml bottle into chalice, best before 12/26/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, pear, fig, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, toast, brown bread, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast esters and moderate candi sugar//bread/caramel malts; with good strength. Taste of raisin, plum, pear, fig, apple, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, toast, brown bread, clove, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, fig, apple, light banana, caramel, candi sugar, clove, toast, brown bread, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity of fruity/earthy yeast ester and moderate caramel/bready/candi sugar malt flavors; with a solid malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this was a nice Dubbel style. Good complexity of fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors with a fair amount of caramel/bready/candi sugar malts; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. Could have used some more maltiness to balance the yeast fruitiness, but was nicely enjoyable otherwise.

Bottle 33cl. Hazy almost opaque redbrown color, small off-white head, disappears quick, thin rim remains; sweet malty nose, some sourness, bread, syrup, plum, apricot, ginger, yeast, herbs = gruut; medium sweet, slightly bitter, wee bit of sourness, spicy; medium to full body, bit watery texture, rather sharp mouthfeel, peppery; subdued sweetbitterfinish, metallic, spicy.

@ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear brown amber with a partial head cover, thin swirls of lace. Taste is toasted malt with dark fruit mixed in, all very understated. In this case, understated implies weak. I should have thought it through when I saw Dubbel and 6.5%. Too big a contradiction. Drinkable, just not much appeal.

Dark brown, big beautiful head. Caramel, plums, yeast. Fizzy, semi-full palate. Light sweetness and bitterness, even some sourness. Pretty drinkable dubbel, if a bit boring.
