3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle pours a deep amber red with a very large head and very nice lace. The aroma is vanilla (cool) and rising bread. The flavor is vanilla, roasted malt, a touch yeasty, and very smooth. The palate is medium rich for the style. Overall, this is nice because of how smooth it is and the vanilla characteristics.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
An earthy aroma, reddish brown pour. Not much head in the bottles I had, good fizz and heavy sediment in the bottle bottom. Like the color. No aftertaste. Once it has cleared the mouth it is gone.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown with reddish hues. The head is creamy light tannish color. Aroma is mainly of dried fruits; raisins can be
detected. Flavor isn't lasting. As soon as you get a taste it's gone and then it becomes bland. The finish is almost watery. The bottle I sampled is before "best by" date. It's not a bad beer, but it's missing something crucial. I was really hoping from a lot more from this beer.

2.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Quite dark brown, with reddish shine; huge fluffy head, irregular, going in patches. Bit burnt nose, ironlike smell, as in blood. Revolting extra aroma, like something rotting. Bitterish start, then some sweet and yet an unnatural sourish finish, lactic. Thin and watery mouthfeel. This is infected, no doubt. Sad. Question is, who brews it these days?

2.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
Although this was a newly stocked bottle, the "best enjoyed by" date was 12/03/01, hmmmm... I also sampled it warmer than the recommended temperature of 40-44 degrees F. Gorgeous "old-world" label amusingly declares both "dubbel bruin" and "double brune." Opens with a healthy phhht, pours a nondememo opaque brown with a nice creamy tannish head. Promising aromas of rum-raisin, currant, fig, prune, chewy toffee candies. A flash of flavor, then it's gone- chocolate covered raisins, roasted grains, a suggestion of weak vending machine coffee. Not overcarbonated, but once it hits the tongue, the flavor just foams away. Clipped, tinny finish gives way to a long, chalky, cocoa powder aftertaste. Probably just past its prime, but some residual sweetness would have helped immensely.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Deep dark brown color with a laced tan head. Plums, caramel, wood, and rich malts fill the nose. A slightly grainy body creates a dry malty flavor with a dark fruit element.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Color is a dark opaque brown with deep ruby highlights and a thick lustrous off-white head about an inch high which settles softly to a thick covering and some drippy spotty lace. Smell doesn't have much to it, some strange rotten or turned fruityness and sweet smokey-like malts but is pretty faint. Taste doesn't have much either, nothing really sticking out here. Some faint unripe fruit, very underdeveloped taste with underlying lightly roasted sweet malts and flowery hops. Transluscent flavors of some light cocoa and clove find their way in but in trace amounts. Null and void, boring and plain. Feel is solid mediumness with a light carbonated texture thats a bit over the top and overall not creamy enough for full enjoyment. Bad bottle I suppose, hard to say really.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Hazy reddish brown color, small tan head that lasted for a nice long time.Malty, wine like aroma.Malty semi-sweet taste with maybe a dried fruit taste in there as well as some possible light caramel and a high amount of carbonation makes this stuff dance around on the pallate.Very faint alcohol presence but it is hidden for the most part. The after taste is lightly sweet and malty.Nothing special middle of the road at best.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
The soft creamy palate is what does it for me in this beer. Yeah, it's got a nice dose of chocolate in the flavour but it's not particularly full tasting, almost a little watery. A nice beer, but not enough flavour.
