Whole Foods Market, DC 4-pack ($11): This is pretty cheap for a Belgian tripel and fortunately it is not a bad beer either. Pours an orange color with a loose white head. Aroma got some gruut, along with a few notes of wine, and plenty of fruitiness to be had. Taste is well-balanced. It is a sipping beer completely because of the mouthfeel. Rather on the sweet side, but not in a cloying way. Spices add a little extra bite to it. I didn’t detect any alcohol in the taste.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 JDBaker11058 (616) - Maryland, USA - JUL 19, 2011
Appearance: clear (!) medium gold, two finger frothy white head shrinking to a creamy cap, solid lacing. Aroma: toasted white bread, caraway seeds, champagne, white pepper. Taste: sweet buttered white toast, spicy notes of fresh cracked pepper, hay, herbal and floral notes, white grapes. Finish: slightly sweet, a little spicy, with some champagne dryness and a little peppery heat. Notes: Like a tripel mixed with a fine pilsner. Really liked the non-typical (for a tripel) spicy peppery/herbal notes, clearly from the gruut. Palate very creamy/oily but with good effervescence. Extremely drinkable.

Nice and fruity. There is a big fruit presence in the aroma. There is a big fruit presence in the taste. Very nicely done. Over 1,000 years old I’m told. I guess there is no sense in screwing up a winner.

4th April 2011 On tap in the Cafe De Engelbewaarder. Clear gold beer, good white head. Light crisp palate. Typical tripel sweetish malt but with a little pepper. Trace of fruit underneath. Served in good nick at the Engelbewaarder - much better than anywhere else I’ve had it in Holland or Belgium.
