JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Feb 18, 2004 Fully clear straw; slim, dense white head, reasonably lacey. Nose of chaff, some grain. Yes, this is probably what is called "crisp". Bit like fluid watered cornflake essence. And that's all there is. Restsugars leave tangible sticky impression - not nice. I had exactly the same motivation as another rater below; after unlikely countries as Tunesia, Albania, Laos and the Fiji Isles, I wanted finally to include NZL. Don't tell me this is what Elijah Wood and his hobbits were drinking at the Prancing Pony... Spanner (60), Canberra, Australia Feb 13, 2004 Some lagers taste like water, but this kiwi has a crisp bite to boot,
Spanner. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Jan 27, 2004 Pure New Zealand piss. A thick white head sits atop a piss yellow body with some lacing left behind. The aroma is full of skunk. slightly sweet malty notes and grassy hop notes are hidden behind the skunk. The flavor is slightly sweet to start but turns bitter and hoppy in the middle and finish. Slighlty skunky but not to bad. Light bodied, smooth and slightly dry. haddon90 (1034), Alexandria, Virginia, USA Jan 11, 2004 Pale, clear golden color with a long lasting white head. Malty aroma. Kind of skunky as well, but that was maybe from the green bottle. Smooth taste. Kind of a strong aftertaste. Overall not too bad. But not great either. PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Jan 10, 2004 Light straw color, no head. Beer can't get much skunkier than my sampling. But hey, green bottle. Total skunk in aroma and flavor. Light grassiness apparent, then empty finish. Pretty light stuff. LeopardMan (53), New Zealand Jan 9, 2004 This is a standard lager which despite the hype (this is supposedly a national icon), doesn't manage to hide the fact.
Aroma and flavour-wise Steinie pretty much is what it is; although, on the bright side, it has greatly improved since I last tried it many years ago. It was, if memory serves, very much "water"; in fact, I came here fully expecting to give it a much lower score.
Also, "Nice" fluffy head and good lacing. SimonLarsen (210), Sydney, Australia Jan 3, 2004 Updated: Feb 29, 2004I think the main good thing about Steinlager is the lack of bad things. Nothing stands out as great (except perhaps the hoppy aroma, for some reason I love that particular hop style smell) but comparing to other choices in the price range there is a lack of bad things. Some malt would help I think by giving another dimension to the taste, as it is there is only one thing happening. Nice enough as a "hot day afternoon beer". theread (51), Wagga Wagga, Australia Jan 2, 2004 This had a sharp malty taste from a light golden lager, but it was awful. I notice the brewery is in Khyber Pass Road. Well, Khyber Pass if rhyming slang for arse, so it comes as no surprise this tasted so crappy. World's best lager, pig's arse. Must be the unzud version of VB. Really ordinary.
