Cask @ The Queens Arms. Black colour, light brown head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee and coffee cream. Flavour is roasted malts and coffee upfront, followed by a light chili spicyness. Creamy and slightly hot finish not too overpowering. Well balanced. Really pleasant.

Cask at The Haymarket. Dark brown pour, thin tan head. Aromas are vegetal and chocolate malt. Taste has a good heat which builds as you drink, but never too much. Liquorice and more chocolate stay in the background. Very nice.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2011 Cask @ The Queens Arms, Edinburgh. Malty aroma with a hint of peppers. Almost black colour with a big foamy head. Creamy malt flavour with a hint of chilli bite. Very smooth. Quite original.

On cask at The Blue Blazer. Pours a very dark brown colour with a beautiful thick, light tan head. A little chilli aroma, however, the nose is primarily caramel with chocolate and roasty malt notes. A nice alcohol and chilli burn leads into roasty malt, coffee and caramel. Alcohol and chilli flavours also linger with moderate carbonation and a foamy mouth-feel.

Cask by handpump at Bertís Bar, Edinburgh (2 Feb 12) - pours very dark red colour with a medium tan head, roasted nut and chocolate aroma, the effect of the chilli is quite subtle in this beer, very well balanced drink, highly recommended

On tap @ the Stockbridge Tap. Pours opaque black with a decent head. The nose has burnt chocolate and just a hint of the capsicum. The taste has more of the chilli coming through and it builds as you go down the glass. The background taste is charcoal and liquorice which is expected since thatís the dry stout style of the Cauld Reekie on which this is based. The palate is medium bodied with a creamy texture and itís fairly refreshing despite the chilli. Overall, yes a good ale!

This is really interesting. i want to say there is no chili up front but then i realize it does start there, though it is muted. Background beer is alcohol and lalty red ale w/ some fresh coffee hints. chili becomes noticeable in the middle, where it is just pleasant pepper flavour. it becomes spicy in the finish, where it has a long lingering spice.
this is really fun and a very nice pint!
iíd say it could be a bit spicier but then it might change into something freakish. as it is, there is a bit of chili spice there but at a level where it is pleasant and complementary. any more and it would be excessive.

Cask at HW. Blackish with tan head. Aroma has toffee, caramel, hint of vanilla, wood, earthiness. Taste has light licorice, molasses, toffee, hint of chili. Quite flat and oily with a lingering spice.

Cask at Blue Blazer . Dark brown, bubbly tan head, not much lacing. Nose of roasted malt, quite earthy dark malts, slight vegatal, some chilli heat. Taste of dark roasted malts with quite a lot of chocolate, some fruitiness in there, plenty of chiili - it isnít subtle and itís fairly hot, gets better the more you drink. Has a medium body, smooth and the finish has dark roast, chocolate with a chilli burn linger - hot but not too much. Seemed disjointed at first until I got used to the heat - liked the smooth dark chocolate underneath the chiili.
