COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Enjoyment of first-rate beer with a pleasant hoppy character. Straw-colored and warm amber glow, pleasantly sparkling with a dry body. Using the aromatic hops from the Mühlviertel region, it entices you with a bouquet of fresh hops and a distinctive bitter finish. 11.4°

Hidden gems at the beer store are some of the best things about being a beer connoisseur. I picked up a can of Stiegl Pils because it was fairly cheap and I just wanted something to review. Little did I know that it would be a great example of the pilsner style.

I poured a 500ml can into a tulip glass. It seems to have been bottled in either August or November of 2015 and cost $3.79 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Beautiful white gold hue with total clarity. Carbonation visible at first. Pours to a very large, white, foamy head which retains and laces wonderfully.

Smell: Plenty of pilsner malt sweetness with a hint of graham cracker. A faint trace of lemon, too.

Taste: A good pilsner doesn’t have to be a massive bouillabaisse of flavors; simple pilsner malt and some Noble hop character is really all you need and this is a great example of that. Lightly bready with a mild sweetness up front, which is nice. Some spicy hop zestiness on the finish along with just a notion of [graham] cracker in the aftertaste. There seems to be some lemonpeel lurking in the background as well. It’s not ridiculously delicious, but it certainly is impressive and enjoyable to say the least.

Drinkability: I’m quite surprised that Stiegl Pils drinks this well since it’s rather light at only 4.9% ABV. I didn’t expect it to hold up this well (since imports like this tend to sit on shelves forever). The body seems a little beefier than you’d expect for a pilsner. Crisp to be sure, but in no way watery or overtly light-bodied. Refreshing while in the mouth with just a bit of a bitterness in the aftertaste. That it comes in cans makes it ideal for warm weather situations and for on-the-go.

500ml bottle - thanks Marduk
Very citrussy - almost limey. Pale, nice tight frothy head, quite persistent. Wateryish palate, but not too thin, pleasant carbonation. Taste is thin too, not muh malt, but plenty of hops. Hops are noble, but a little sharp and spikey, citrussy. Has a harshness to it and a bit of acidity, so not so pleasant some of the time. However a fairly characterful lager, perhaps pils-heads might like it. A bit emasculated by being filtered.

Pours a clear sunny golden color, topped with a fine white frothy head. Nice, fresh grassy hop aroma, some grainy malt notes as well in the back. Taste starts slightly sweet, nice grassiness and a bit of that sourish pinch. Nice bitterness in the finish. Crisp, drinkable. While it may not be the best pils, it certainly is a very decent one.

Poured from can into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a golden straw color with a puffy white foam head. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is biggest of a bready smell mixed with some grain and a bit of a corn sweetness mixed within. Rounding out the aromas are some light grass and a little bit of lemon and caramel. Taste – The taste begins with a light cracker taste mixed with a light showing of a sour lemon and a little bit of hay. As the taste advances some grainy flavors and a bit of grass join the tongue, all while a little more lemon joins the taste. With a bit of drying out of some of the sweeter flavors and even more grain, one is left with a crisp and somewhat clean and slightly sour taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the style, a little thinner body may have been slightly better to create a very crisp brew, but even with that said, the feel was rather nice overall. Overall – A rather decent pils. Decently crisp and refreshing with a nice level of flavor and drinkability. Not a bad brew to at least give a try to.
