I have three favorite Pils: Sly Fox, Palaner Pils, and now I’ve added Stiegl to the list. I can change on a whim but as of this minute I have to rate Stiegl the best of the crop. I seen a lot of bad ratings on this site for this beer but Pils is a delicate beer and depending on the freshness it can be either great or horrible. I have had Sly Fox and Paulaner that were somewhat old but not past their prime and both were very substandard. One had the aroma of smelly socks and the other just seem to have lost its hop flavor. I was fortunate enough to be able to pick some some fresh Stiegl Pils at Pletcher’s in State College, PA and they were giving out free glasses to boot. What a deal. I will say this, on almost every pour, the head was rich and creamy when poured into a clean Stiegl Cup (as they call it) and you have to wait a few minutes for it to die down before you can add anymore. For those who complained about the head, either you had a dirty glass or got some old beer. This is the way German beer used to be until they started to lighten it up and water it down like the Bud’s and Miller’s of the world. Of course, this isn’t a German Beer, but an Austria and perhaps that partially explains why it is so good.

Aroma is sweetish with butter, grainy malt and some hay. Also grassy hops. Flavour has grainy malt, grassy hops, butter, hay and hints of cardboard. Some lingering grassy hops. A solid pils without anything offensive.

Pale yellow, big head. Grass, citrus. Medium bitterness. Pretty typical Pilsener, not offensive - not interesting. Good thirst-quencher.

Clear light golden with little sparkling and medium long three finger white rocky/frothy head. Light grainy aroma is dry and one-sided. Grainy flavor, quite soft, standard carbonation, medium long finish, light body. Easy to drink but bit lame and lacks nuances.

A light yellow beer with a big and white head. Aroma has lots of malts, some honey, fresh grass. Taste has light malts, some honey, grass. Bitterness isn’t very strong but still enough of drying the malts. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, quite smooth. Basic pils, malts and grass.

500 ml bottle. Clear pale yellow colour, white head. Aroma of grassy hops and grainy malt. The flavour is grainy malty, with notes of diacetyl and sweetness, and a grassy finish. Nothing special.

Clear yellow beer with a big white foam. Regular lager/pils aroma. Hyi vittu. A lot of cooked vegetables in the taste. Horrible. Soft and sweet malts but only a faint bitterness. How can it be this bad even if I’m so thirsty?

Bottle. Light golden, small to average and mostly diminishing head. Light to moderate, malty - lightly grainy and lightly sweetish aroma, light - some grassy hoppyness. Body is light to medium, malty - lightly grainy and dryish flavor, light - some grassy hoppyness. Finish is short to average, malty - grainy and dryish, light corn, some grassy hoppyness. OK dryish and nicely hopped pils. Bit too grainy for me .
