A fine, lively type of beer, with a bouquet produced by premium quality Saaz hops to stimulate the senses - that’s Stiegl Pils. 11.6°

I have three favorite Pils: Sly Fox, Palaner Pils, and now I’ve added Stiegl to the list. I can change on a whim but as of this minute I have to rate Stiegl the best of the crop. I seen a lot of bad ratings on this site for this beer but Pils is a delicate beer and depending on the freshness it can be either great or horrible. I have had Sly Fox and Paulaner that were somewhat old but not past their prime and both were very substandard. One had the aroma of smelly socks and the other just seem to have lost its hop flavor. I was fortunate enough to be able to pick some some fresh Stiegl Pils at Pletcher’s in State College, PA and they were giving out free glasses to boot. What a deal. I will say this, on almost every pour, the head was rich and creamy when poured into a clean Stiegl Cup (as they call it) and you have to wait a few minutes for it to die down before you can add anymore. For those who complained about the head, either you had a dirty glass or got some old beer. This is the way German beer used to be until they started to lighten it up and water it down like the Bud’s and Miller’s of the world. Of course, this isn’t a German Beer, but an Austria and perhaps that partially explains why it is so good.

Bottle. Pale yellow clear. Bit grainy malty, fine green citrus hoppyness. Some corn. Light bodied, dry, nicely bitter. Clean, bit sterile, but nice citrus. Ok.

Bottle 500ml (Alko)
Pale yellow color, small steady white head. Sweetish corn-like maltynes in the nose. Light-bodied. Grainy and quite sweet cornlike malty. Saaz is combined with this sweetness. More on Supermarket bulk than quality German-type pils.

Can shared at Perennial by a local St. Louisan. Pours a clear, pale gold with a white head. Notes of bread, cracker, straw, grass, leaves, and some sugar. Pretty basic pils. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry mouthfeel. Works as an easy, relatively light, low-ABV sipper.

Keg @ Hinchcliffe Arms, Cragg Vale. Gold with a thick frothy head and an active carbonation. Has a malty lager nose and an ordinary bland taste.

Poured from a largish bottle into a flute glass to drink. The beer had a crisp, clear gold color with rising bubbles and large fluffy white head with good retention, and pretty good cling and lacing. A light grainy hops aroma with some floral and citrus notes and a bit of yeast and malt. A modestly bitter grainy and earthly flavor with some herbal and cereal notes, and the slightest touch of malt. The beer had a lighter, but lively mouthfeel with average dryness and a dry after-effect.

Tap at Happy Gnome. Clear yellow pour with a white head. Almost shandy-like in its aroma - lemony. This isn’t the radler, though. Very crisp and drinkable. Not bad.
