5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I have three favorite Pils: Sly Fox, Palaner Pils, and now I’ve added Stiegl to the list. I can change on a whim but as of this minute I have to rate Stiegl the best of the crop.
I seen a lot of bad ratings on this site for this beer but Pils is a delicate beer and depending on the freshness it can be either great or horrible. I have had Sly Fox and Paulaner that were somewhat old but not past their prime and both were very substandard. One had the aroma of smelly socks and the other just seem to have lost its hop flavor.
I was fortunate enough to be able to pick some some fresh Stiegl Pils at Pletcher’s in State College, PA and they were giving out free glasses to boot. What a deal.
I will say this, on almost every pour, the head was rich and creamy when poured into a clean Stiegl Cup (as they call it) and you have to wait a few minutes for it to die down before you can add anymore. For those who complained about the head, either you had a dirty glass or got some old beer.
This is the way German beer used to be until they started to lighten it up and water it down like the Bud’s and Miller’s of the world. Of course, this isn’t a German Beer, but an Austria and perhaps that partially explains why it is so good.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
4/18/2015 (bottle): Grainy, grassy, crisp, and clean. Classic Austrian Pils. This definitely takes me back to my three months spent in Austria in late 2000. I still enjoy this beer quite a bit, but slightly prefer the Stiegl Goldbräu.

A real Austrian Pilsner (Pilsener?). This is getting very close to the original source, and I like it.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
This is getting a better rating due to the fact I am drinking it on a mountain skiing in 55 degree weather. 16oz can at Viking yurt in park city. Malty and crappy.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
16.9 oz can from Whole Foods. Pale golden yellow with a foamy white head. Taste of sweet cereal grains and freshly baked white bread up front. Floral hoppiness along with a grassy backbone takes over. The carbonation is lively. The body is light with a dry finish. The flavor is well balanced, creamy yet crisp and clean. An exemplary pilsener.

Sweet, grainy malt, and floral aroma. Similar flavor -- with more sweetness, and a sweeter aftertaste.

2.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pint can pours a clear pale straw/yellow with a very large foamy white head. Aroma of a nice dry pils yeast and malt with spicy grassy hops. Taste of empty boring flat caramel malt with faint hops and bitterness on the finish. Really disappointed in the taste. But the aroma is almost exactly what I look for in a nice Pilsener.
