A fine, lively type of beer, with a bouquet produced by premium quality Saaz hops to stimulate the senses - that’s Stiegl Pils. 11.6°

I have three favorite Pils: Sly Fox, Palaner Pils, and now I’ve added Stiegl to the list. I can change on a whim but as of this minute I have to rate Stiegl the best of the crop. I seen a lot of bad ratings on this site for this beer but Pils is a delicate beer and depending on the freshness it can be either great or horrible. I have had Sly Fox and Paulaner that were somewhat old but not past their prime and both were very substandard. One had the aroma of smelly socks and the other just seem to have lost its hop flavor. I was fortunate enough to be able to pick some some fresh Stiegl Pils at Pletcher’s in State College, PA and they were giving out free glasses to boot. What a deal. I will say this, on almost every pour, the head was rich and creamy when poured into a clean Stiegl Cup (as they call it) and you have to wait a few minutes for it to die down before you can add anymore. For those who complained about the head, either you had a dirty glass or got some old beer. This is the way German beer used to be until they started to lighten it up and water it down like the Bud’s and Miller’s of the world. Of course, this isn’t a German Beer, but an Austria and perhaps that partially explains why it is so good.

500 ml bottle. Pours a yellow colour with a small head. Aroma of grains, fresh grassy hops and some herbs. Flavour of fresh herbal hops, grainy malts, bitterness and some mild citrus. Medium bodied. Surprisingly rich for a pils. Good and very quaffable.

Right in the ballpark for a German pils. Biscuity malts, clear golden body and soft creamy head. Crisp and clean.

Had a grassy hop character to it that I dug quite a bit more than the last pils. Also slight sweetness from the grain and corn(?) but a clean, crisp drink.

0,5 liter can. Not bad at the start, after that it goes downhill. This one is a little too bitter for me.

0.5 l bottle form Alko. Quite nice head, light yellow colour, lots of bubbles. Taste has some hops or CO2 with malts. Interesting, it tastes like a dark lager. Quite nice Pilsener.

White golden clear beer with white head leaving lacing. Aroma has grass, butter and some fruits. Flavor has fruits, pale malts and grass. Medium full and soft palate. Finish has only mild bitterness. Quite dry and needs more bitterness.

Bottle. Clear golden, fluffy head. Hay, grassyness and floral notes in aroma. Grassy bitter in taste, some grainy notes as well.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 19.02.2015
Aroma is sweetish with butter, grainy malt and some hay. Also grassy hops. Flavour has grainy malt, grassy hops, butter, hay and hints of cardboard. Some lingering grassy hops. A solid pils without anything offensive.

Pale yellow, big head. Grass, citrus. Medium bitterness. Pretty typical Pilsener, not offensive - not interesting. Good thirst-quencher.
