COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Quebecois call it ice cider. Sweet, golden, and full-bodied in the glass, Apfel Eis is made from a blend of local varietal apples – over 80 apples in each bottle. Inspired by techniques used to make ice wine, Apfel Eis is pressed without preservatives, and slowly fermented at very cold temperatures. This preserves the delicate aromas and flavors that would disappear if fermented more quickly at warmer temperatures. Unlike most wines and ciders made from apples, Apfel Eis has absolutely no sugar added – before or after fermentation. The result is a unique taste sensation – sweet, with a gentle bite, complex flavor and clean finish. Apfel Eis preserves the aromatic fragrance of freshly picked apples. A sip or two, and you may find yourself in an apple orchard on a crisp fall day…

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2013 Bottle from dad. Big and boozy, Eau du Vie and crabapple aroma. Fairly flat and unimpressive. Flavor has decent body but a bit of an unripe note. Acidity is not on point. A little floral. Not too bad.

Poured a pale golden color at Epcot during the Food and Wine festival, aromas of sweet apple juice, light grapes, and some light apple core. Flavors are sweet apples, not overly sweet, but just enough, almost like apple juice. This was pretty good, and they were selling bottles for only $26 bought a few because the wife loved this too.

Apple and wine-like grapes in the aroma. Flavor is smooth and candy-like, like a liquid, alcoholic SweetTart. Some wooden, earthy notes in the finish. I’m not at all a fan of hard cider, but I’ve now tried a few ice ciders, and they’re a different animal. Pricey but worth it, especially if you want to treat yourself to something different and very good. Worth seeking out if you’ve never tried an ice cider.

thanks for the share, Dad. Thick sweet honey and apple sugars, caramel goodness. Thick bodied. Acidity is pretty sharp and rounded out by a nice oak and earthiness.

Bottle courtesy of Scarlett for Christmas 2012. Pours a thick golden syrup with no head or lacing. Aroma is sweet apples, honey and butter. Mouthfeel is medium to thick with notes of sweet apple, honey, flowers and a light spice addition. Good ice cider.

Bottle from James shared with some Dads at his January tasting. Aroma is buttery apples, french oak. Taste is granny smith like with tart, slightly acidic apples. Really a complex finish from the oak. Very nice cider.

Bottle. Pours a clear gold. Sweet apple and a light amount of acid. Medium bodied, smooth and sticky, warm apple flavors come through, a touch of straw and the lovely sweetness of ice cider. Sticky sweet, caramel and apple sugar, warming alcohol and lingering sweetness. Quite nice.

375ml bottle poured at CiderDays 2010. Vibrant gold pour. Funky vinous aroma. Flavors burst with wild pineapple, coconut, and passionfruit. Tons of tropical fruit. Less acid and tannins around to balance, however. Alcohol seems subdued. I think this was my least favorite of the five of this tasting, because it seemed a bit unbalanced, but I will commend it for the intense tropical fruit flavors.

Pours gold and still. Smells of pronounced sweet apples, some honeydew, some melon. Tastes sweet and fruity with a cognac like finish.

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2009 Bottle from Whole Foods on Market in Cambridge. Shared around the table at the end of a nice little sendoff. Poured into a Duck-Rabbit snifter. A color sort of a blend between sea green & yellow squash. Not the prettiest thing. Smell was different from other ice ciders I’ve tried. Very humble for an iced cider, with notes of green apple skins, sour melon, muscat grapes, sweet scrumpy, & dew. Taste was full-flavored, but again, very different. Starts off with half-sour golden crisps, & a little twangy browned/bruised flesh. Moving down, tart green grapes, sharp & pungent cider vinegar, & everyday(if somewhat extra creamy) Mott’s apple juice. The alcohol is only ever felt when the acidity lets up. Otherwise, it’s pretty invisible. Not really much in common with typical Canadian ice ciders except for syrupy, lush feel. Even here, it’s a little thinner. There’s no fuming aroma to fall in love with. No baked apple pie to savor. More like a refreshing summer edition.
