4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Head is initially large, fizzy/frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is hazy medium to dark yellow.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain / crackers, sourdough bread), lightly hoppy (herbs), lightly yeasty (cobwebs, barnyard), with notes of pepper, minerals, autumn leaves, apple skins, straw, oak/twigs.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, velvety/fluffy texture, lively carbonation.
It’s hard not to be effusive about this one...this is pretty much tailor-made for me. I was a HUGE fan of Blaugies d’Epeautre back in the days when it was a world-beater. It’s still quite good these days, but nowhere near its former glory. Mind you, I’m not going to sit here and claim I can "smell the spelt". I have used spelt in breadmaking a few times long ago, and I also used to eat spelt pretzels (Newman’s Own) all the time, but I would never claim I could pick it out of a police line-up (by nose). But when I took the first whiff of this, Blaugies d’Epeautre *instantly* sprang to mind. And this is about as good as that beer was in its heyday...perhaps a tiny bit less complex, but we’ll see what this is like with another 6 months of bottle rest. There’s just something about spelt, I suppose, that’s really rustic, nostalgic, and nourishing to me, and it’s probably largely involuntary. And this couldn’t be too much better of a rendition of saison, really...super clean (and yet, again, very rustic...not to mean "wild" exactly...but very farmy), super balanced, super quaffable, tremendously rustic nose, wonderful mouthfeel, long finish...and I really could not find any flaws with it. It’s examples like this why saison has long remained my favorite style...to re-quote myself, saison is life!

Bottle from ABS drinks. Herbal, flowery, grainy nose. Pot, grass, lemon, grains, biscuits, yeast. Deep, cloudy golden orange with a tall, fine head. Lemony flavor, lightly tart, bready. Light sweetness is balanced well by earthy, bitter hops and tartness. Light stewed fruit. Great.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hazy yellow-gold with huge, fine-bubble, flotsam head, fine legs / Delicate, acidic nose of orchard fruit, citrus, spice, grain, chrysanthemum / Light to medium body, acidic, lightly fruit with great balance, a hint of sweetness but otherwise very dry with fine, bitter finish / Elegant, earthy, complex flavors of lemon, apple, pear, banana, straw, spelt, coriander, hint of clove / On the lighter side, but this is a terrific summer porch quaffer.
