Sampled this one at Where the Wild Beers Are, 6/7/14
Only non-sour/wild style beer of the fest. Pours a brown color with a lighter brown head. Some toasty and tasty stuff. Made for a nice mix-in with so many similarly styled beers.

Tap, Max’s Taphouse. Clear dark brown, almost black body, nice frothy brown head. Nose is roasty and coffee laced with a bit of dark fruit and floral hops. The flavor is on the drier side, slightly astringent with coffee and roast. Light bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation and a lingering finish. Pretty nice beer.

12 ounce can from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville. Pours a dark brown color with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, floral notes, stone fruits, bubblegum, a bit of nuttiness. The taste is chocolate, roast, herbal notes, bubblegum, cherries. Thin-medium bodied. Solid.

Can. Smudged born on date, but I know it was packaged in 2014. Gentle roast in the nose, heavy chocolate with burn, char, ash -- a good start so far! Pour is dark brown-black with a large and tight brown head, sort of muddy-colored but jiggly and inviting. Light body somewhat watery, smooth roast and malt, aforementioned black touches all around, but everything wrapped in creamy-smooth mouthfeel. Touch sweet, almost no bitterness, sticky lips, touch mineral, no fruit. Actually has some good maltiness! Very moreish, very pleased, it’s rare to find them this good even (especially!) in the former East Germany; still, more a mild Belgian Stout than a Schwarzbier.

Brontide has an extremely thick, wildly foamy, beige head, a very dark brown appearance, and some stringy lacing left behind. The aroma is of semi-sweet malt, some char, and sea air. Taste is of charred malt, metal, and acidity. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Brontide finishes powdery and mostly dry. There is not a lot of taste with this one, and what tastes I did get were not appealing. Also, there is an overriding and growing metallic aspect, here. RJT

Can @ AirBNB Arts Colony. Black pour with a tall khaki head. Nose is a touch ashy and quite roasty as expected. Some acidic dark fruit and earthy hops. A hint of cranberry and chocolate. Flavor is a touch bitter and certainly somewhat acidic. Roast, ash, and cranberry. Slight chalk, some earth, and a light bready sweetness. Seltzer water finish.

Aromas of honey, straw and malt. The taste has a strong element of roasted malt plus lemon and the merest hint of chocolate. Quite a nice palate. An interesting beer.

Can. Pours a black color with tan head. Roasty, sweet, malty, slight metallic aromas. Smooth, roasty, cocoa, malty flavors. The metallic notes weaken an otherwise tasty dark beer.

Can:   Black, moderate foamy beige head, spotty lacing.   Roasty nose, a little whole wheat breadiness but its minor.   Lots of simple roasted malts ont he tongue.   Slightly dry.   Needs to be a touch sweeter as its drier than most.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Soft roasted malt finish.   Thankfully not acrid, fairly clean, but needs to have a touch more sweetness in my book.

Can - pours dark ruby, nearly black - significant tan head that dissipates fairly quickly - nose is mineral, moderate roast, tobacco, bittersweet chocolate - moderate carbonation - quite dry, with strong mineral and dry, roasty character - moderate bitterness - some earthy, leafy, autumnal qualities - maybe a hint of smoke - the mineral is a little strong, but this is a fairly solid rendition.
