This pours a very dark brown color with a thick foamy head. The aroma is bold with lots of toasted and roasted malts and grains. The taste is heavier than most porters with lots of dark fruits and grains. It finishes with a lingering toasted caramel flavor. Overall, it’s quite good and interesting. Very appealing to those dark beer lovers!

Pours two fingers of light tan head on a black body. The aroma is roasted malt with a little sour (off) smell. The taste has mild roasted malt and sour notes. Not too enjoyable. The texture is crisp. I won’t get this again. Off flavor and smell.

Drank from the can. Aroma consists of roasted nuts and malts, baker’s chocolate, bread, and caramel. Taste focuses on the nutty qualities while the chocolate takes the back seat. The beer is also mildly salty. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth feel. Gets better as it warms.

Weird beer. A bit of a smokiness to it, and some estery fruitiness, like berries. A bit of sweet toffee but also some molasses character. Light drinking. Interesting stuff.

Earl of Essex. Keg. Almost opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy, semi dry and minerally crisp. Very mild dark malts, good fruity tang, dark fruits that is. Whisper of citric orange hops before a crisp finish. Simple stuff but goes down easy.

Keg at the Earl of Essex, 19/11/14. Light black with a decent tan swirl. Nose is tangy fruit rinds, woody notes, treacle toffee, lactic notes. Taste comprises light charr, farmy notes, dark toffee, tangy red berry notes, lactic licks. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok stuff, could almost have it as a dark saison.
