4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Stillwater Artisanal Existant has a thin, cream-colored head, a very dark brown appearance, with noticeable and fairly large yeast chunks floating about, and bit of a lacing sheen left behind. The aroma is of slightly dank, bready malt, with just a hint of spice. Taste is of sweet, spicy, rich, gourmet bread, dark fruit, fairly strong bitterness, and some hard-to-pin-down herbs. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Stillwater Artisanal Existant finishes rich, full, and memorable. RJT

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Haven’t had this for ages. Not since I started ratebeering. Damn I had some good beers before I started this. Aroma is lightly roasty, bit saison like, touch of citrus, bit spicy, peppery. Taste is good, porter like fruitiness, quite dry, dark saison I guess. Pepper again, little bit of sweetness, some chocolate. Yum.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
355ml bottle @ the 5th Shrewsbury Bottle Share May 14, courtesy of Paolo. Pours like flat coke with an earthy carrot aroma. Taste is fairly yeasty with coriander and wheat, almost like a schwarz-saison if that actually exists. A touch of toffee and roasted malts merging in. Interesting.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
19th May: Shrewsbury Bottle Swap. Cheers Mat or Simon. Split between four of us, so plenty each. Poured a dark ruby colour with no head worthy of the name. Wanted to smell ’horse blankets and dirty farmyard esters’ but was pleasantly surprised at the malty, spicy, herbal, yeasty and fruity aromas that hit my nose. The taste was also an intriguing blend of flavours, again with the maltiness to the fore, with chocolate and caramel leading the way. The sweetness was tempered by a dry hoppiness and slight citrus feel: the yeast and alcohol hit can also be detected as you sip the brew. Different and interesting.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Fra flaske pået utmerket Cardinaltreff mai-14: beige skum og bæraktig aroma og smak. Lite bitterhet. Farlig lett å helle innpå for en som er glad i de belgiske ølstiler. Saftig og sunn.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2014-05-09. Very dark mahogany brown body with a modest tan head. 3++ Average bodied palate with light carbonation is sort of nice but feels thin for the beer. Aroma is a bit odd, it has sort of an earthy, nutty, mushroomy like quality to it, underlying malt. Flavour has similar earthy vaguely nutty quality to it. Like walnuts or roasted chestnuts but not quite. Just okay. Bottle sample at Volo, Toronto

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/5/2013. Pours lightly cloudy nearly opaque dark brown color with a 3 finger dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, roasted malt, pear, apple, toast, peppercorn, clove, herbal, floral, grass, dark bread, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, pear, apple, peppercorn, clove, herbal, floral, grass, dark bread, light funk, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roast, caramel, toast, pear, apple, peppercorn, clove, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a nice crisp malt/yeast flavor balance with zero cloying after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately prickly, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent dark saison. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
4oz pour at the Fare. Aroma is chocolate and wheat. Pours thin and dark with a nice ring of white bubbly film. Taste is feint chocolate cake, pepper, lemon seed, and birds of paradise. Light in the mouth and quick to vanish. Meh. Tastes like someone accidentally dropped a chocolate cake into an otherwise perfect saison.
