355 ml purchase at the Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury (VT) on August 19, 2014. Pure black, small beige head. Fruity coffee aroma, some spiciness. Fruity chocolate taste, a bit sour, good coffee bitterness. Untraditional but good!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark and earthy with a tan laced head from a bottle to glass. Great use of Belgian yeast, as it is apparent in aroma and taste. Solid beer.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Stillwater Folklore has a thin, beige head, a dark brown (essentially black) appearance, and not really any lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, dark-roasted malt, black cherry, dark chocolate, and char. Taste is of dark-roasted, charred malt, black cherry, a touch of licorice, bitterness from the char, prunes, and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium, not heavy, as one might expect. Stillwater Folklore finishes semi-dry, rich, and surprisingly smooth. No real alcohol pick up with this one. RJT

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
75cl bottle served in a Leffe glass. Absolute gusher! Two minutes and glasses of froth later and I am able to pour this into a glass. Aroma is powerful dark fruits (blackberries, cherries) and burnt malts. Pours a wonderful dark brown (almost black) ale with a hugely impressive dark beige head which persists throughout the drink. This is a sipper. Taste is very complex with the dark fruits promised in the aroma being forefront in its presentation but giving way almost immediately to chocolate and coffee. As the beer warms up charred barrels are very prominent in the aftertaste with a nice tobacco(y) dryness. Mouthfeel is medium so spot on for a stout (this is not an imperial stout) with a reasonably lively carbonation. I have awarded bonus points for the truly excellent artwork on the label. A welcome addition to my repeat order list and further proof that I am preferring American beers to Belgians.

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Starts fine spicy, hoppy background, well balanced. Finish again milder, soft-malty. Malty-dry aftertaste. Okay.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle- Pours black as night with a very small head that reduces to a thin collar. Aroma is typical for a stout, a bit thin actually, some Belgian yeast characteristicts, but pretty basic. The taste is yeasty, chocolate up front, coffee, somewhat Belgian i guess. Body is fairly thin which i was expecting based on what i read on the label, but the carbonation is a bit low which I was not expecting. This is just okay.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black with a large fading head.
Nose shows dry roasted malt, cocoa, milk chocolate and oatmeal.
Flavours include big chocolate notes, dry roasted barley and a hint of liquorice too. A nice amount of residual sweetness.
Carbonation is a bit aggressive.

On tap at the BeerTemple. Dark black brown pour with tan foam. Aroma is roasty, light chocolate notes, light leather, pretty malty. Taste is really roasty, burnt toast, light caramel notes, nice alcohol warmth. Palate is med-full bodied with good carbonation. Easy drinking.
