COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing thatís for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So letís get the stories flowing and share a little íFolkloreí. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

   AROMA 5/10   APPEARANCE 3/5   TASTE 5/10   PALATE 2/5   OVERALL 9/20
ClarkVV (3856) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 21, 2014
10/7/13 bottle (brewed at Two Roads), drunk on 1/21/14
Deep chestnut brown body has auburn tints on the edges, with a charred-beige colored head that very quickly recedes to a light smattering around the edges. High clarity, with no sediment left behind.
Prunes, raisins, roasted barley, vanilla, hickory and Belgian esters (bubblegum, light banana and vanilla) in the nose definitely seem pretty spot on for a Belgian stout. Some glue-like fusels are faintly noted at first. Medium strength of aroma with the esters and alcohol drowning out the maltiness.
Milk chocolate and roasted barley flavors lead things off, with some dry, astringent notes from the barley and lots of alcohol fusels. A bitter, perfumey alcohol note is felt in the back of the throat and lingers on the finish, while the maltiness, sweet at first, dosent seem to have much depth and succumbs to the heavy esters/fusels. Glue, cherries and prunes all linger on the finish, and the beer remains very dry with some tobacco and dark chocolate notes. Thereís some good stuff goin on here, but itís pretty scattered about and this pervasive alchol and heavy ester profile makes it quite difficult to drink. Maybe they let the fermentation temps go a little bit too high on this one? I donít know, but itís definitely problematic for the beer. The bottles have sat warm at Julios (where I bought them) but the other three Iíve had so far (IBU, Existent and Cellar Door) exhibited none of this, so itís hard to imagine thatís the problem. Will certainly try again.

750ml bottle, with a black dark brown color, with an average bubble tan head, but falls quickly. Mild yeasty, chocolate chip cookie dough, cocoa, mocha, chocolate milkshake, brown chocolate nose, with some light dark dried fruit, faint licorice, burnt toast notes, with some roasted, black, chocolate, toasted malt, dark bitter chocolate, coffee accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a warmth yeasty, dark dried fruit, dark bitter chocolate, roasted grind coffee bean, black coffee, burnt toast, mild chocolate chip cookie dough character, with some roasted, black, chocolate, toasted malty, molasses, licorice, burnt chocolate pie crust, cocoa, boozy chocolate liquor flavours, leading towards a warming, belgian yeast fruitiness, dark bitter chocolate, black coffee, chocolate, black, toasted maltiness, lingering roasty bitterness finish.

Bathory (458) - Bryne, NORWAY - JAN 6, 2014
A large bang when I open the bottle and the beer found itís own way out. Pours a almost pitch black colour with a huge soapy brown head. Aroma of smoke, leaves, som coffee and light touches of chocolate. Pleasant smell. Flavour is smokey, earthy, leaves, espresso and hints of alcohol. A lot of carbonation from the belgian yeast, which create a rather sticky mouthfeel. Overall, a very good beer, but maybe a bit too much carbonated for me

jhp40219 (254) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - JAN 4, 2014
12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a one-finger chocolate colored tan head with a good amount of lacing that slowly slides back into the beer. Aroma of Sweet Tart candy, (I assume a combination of the Belgian yeast and candi sugar), dominates the nose. Also picking up black licorice, dark fruits (plum and raisin mostly), dark chocolate, slight bit of coffee. Taste is roasted chocolate and caramel malts up front with candi sugar, dark fruits, black licorice, a bit of dark chocolate and a bit of alcohol. Medium body, slick but slightly oily texture, average carbonation, long dry and bitter finish in which the hops come though with the candi sugar. An interesting beer. The Belgian yeast brings out a distinct flavor that helps it stand out from other stouts. Tasty and original!

Pours dark brown with an off white ring. Little to no lacing. The aroma is a malty dark fruit grain smell with maybe some alcohol. The taste is likened unto an imperial stout with sweetness coming through strong in the end. Itís slightly over carbonated but still good. The taste of alcohol came through a little strong at first but calmed down.

Tap at Alehouse. Pours deep blank with a coffee icecream colored head that lingers. Scent is multigrain bread, dark chocolate, coffee. Flavor follows nose. A earthy coffee bitterness and a touch of warmth on the finish.
