4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Picked up a bottle at Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in San Diego, CA. Started to foam over when I uncapped the bottle. Poured nearly black with an enormous, foamy tan head, and seemed overcarbonated with the first sips...but settled down after I let it stand for a little while. Aroma is huge and really wonderful: spicy dark fruits, banana, and brown sugar. Flavors are a very nice, complex mixture of fruit—especially black cherries—chocolate, and a tasty, mellow coffee finish. Medium body and fairly drinkable for a richly-flavored beer. Very good overall!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from BOTW. Brought this back for my mates, but they will all get it on tap next week, as will I, so I drank it. very fruity nose, grapes and cherries, light citrus. Maybe some chocolate, coffee, and licorice, but it’s light. Dull black with lace. Flavor is more stout-like; lots of dark chocolate, some coffee, roasted wood, fruits. Nice and interesting. Not a straight-forward stout, something spicy and Belgian. Good stuff, though. Body it a bit thin, but i dig it.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(Bottled 1/2/14) - 1 Finger orangy brown head of fine bubbles. Dark black body. Slight smokey aroma. Dark malts carry over into the flavor. Burnt malt on the back end. Some mouth feel, though seems proper for the style and alcohol content. Says unfiltered. But there was no sludge on the bottom of the bottle after pouring. Nice sipping stout.

Bottle at Union Square Cafe NYC. Superb bottle label. Dark black colour, decent carbonation, off white head. Never really understood Belgian stouts before, they always seemed quite stouty and not so Belgian, but I think I’m slowly getting there. This one had clearly a good roasty malt profile, but then a spiciness and slightly herbal note which was very interesting. I was a fan, and this beer did extraordinary things in conjunction with the fennel shortbread which came with one of the desserts in this place. It was a taste sensation.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle pour. Very dark with medium head. Aroma is multi-dimensional with some coffee and some sour fruit. Malty flavor with a quick change to chocolate, coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. Very roasted flavor to finish. I really enjoy this beer. Very complex. Delicious.

Draft. Fairly hoppy and roasty. Not even sure what they were going for but is pretty nice.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Deep dark brown coloured body, about 95% opaque with a thin, oily brown head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, earth, oatmeal, anise and a touch of caramel - strong. Medium to Slightly-Full-Bodied; Strong dry earthy flavour at first with a lot of oatmeal and roasted malt, some light cacao, a moderate amount of yeast notes and some light tastes of oysters. Aftertaste is slightly sweeter with caramel and toffee, but the very dry assertively bitter flavour doesn’t sit too well. Overall, a fairly one dimensional and rather uninspiring beer with not enough profile or complexity to be a good beer in any of the stout categories. This tastes more like a dry stout than anything else, but even that category wouldn’t make this beer good. I’m guessing the high ratings are from the label on the front. Take that off or replace it and you’d lose the lustre of this beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle after a hockey game in Arlington, Virignia on 19-March-2014 - Thanks Kevin!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
from Mikkeller & Friends - pretty black beer under a persistent beige foam; bready with some roasted malts, a bit mineral with notes of black chocolate; full-bodied, velvety mouthfeel, earthy and pretty sweet, light bitterness and some residual sweetness in a long coffeish, earthy and nutty finish - interesting profile

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This pleasant surprise is very dark brown, almost black, with red hues. It has a dark, malty aroma, while not being too roasted. It’s nice and easy. The flavor is really nice, almost fruity, and nearly candy-like, but not in the way that most fruity stouts are. It’s really nice and inviting, a real treat. It has a soft, beautiful mouthfeel and finish, nearly chocolaty, thin, but complex and mature. Bueno.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2014 [5266-20130426] Tap. Roasted malt grain and light coffee-infused aroma. Black body with a huge long-lasting creamy light brown head. Spiced boozy yeast bread flavour has a Belgian cucumber-y base. Medium-full body. Very odd at first, I thought the Belgian yeastiness was jalapenos. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4
