COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

burnt umber hue with voluminous red brown topper, medium high carbonation, smells at first like a hoppy brown ale, dark fruit, molasses and a very slight smokey whiff. Earthy spicey hopiness, prune, trace of smoke in the flavor. Medium and lively body. I don’t really know what constitutes a foreign stout so can’t say much about how it compares to others or if it is true to style. After the sip a slowly subsiding biterness gives way to smokey sweetness.

Draught at Harry’s Hofbrau. Clear brown with brown head. Belgian yeast stars with a subtle funk and moderate chocolate.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with an average size semi-lasting frothy light-brown head. Some lacing. Aroma is sweet, yeasty and chocolatey. Flavour of yeast and chocolate along with dark fruit and some sugary sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. Just good, a bit too sweet for me.

355 ml purchase at the Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury (VT) on August 19, 2014. Pure black, small beige head. Fruity coffee aroma, some spiciness. Fruity chocolate taste, a bit sour, good coffee bitterness. Untraditional but good!

Dark and earthy with a tan laced head from a bottle to glass. Great use of Belgian yeast, as it is apparent in aroma and taste. Solid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Stillwater Folklore has a thin, beige head, a dark brown (essentially black) appearance, and not really any lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, dark-roasted malt, black cherry, dark chocolate, and char. Taste is of dark-roasted, charred malt, black cherry, a touch of licorice, bitterness from the char, prunes, and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium, not heavy, as one might expect. Stillwater Folklore finishes semi-dry, rich, and surprisingly smooth. No real alcohol pick up with this one. RJT

Bottle thanks Jeremy. Black pour with tan head. Licorice, some roasted, chocolate, other almost medicinal aromas. Flavors are roasted and dry malt tones, chocolate, some licorice and spice tones.

75cl bottle served in a Leffe glass. Absolute gusher! Two minutes and glasses of froth later and I am able to pour this into a glass. Aroma is powerful dark fruits (blackberries, cherries) and burnt malts. Pours a wonderful dark brown (almost black) ale with a hugely impressive dark beige head which persists throughout the drink. This is a sipper. Taste is very complex with the dark fruits promised in the aroma being forefront in its presentation but giving way almost immediately to chocolate and coffee. As the beer warms up charred barrels are very prominent in the aftertaste with a nice tobacco(y) dryness. Mouthfeel is medium so spot on for a stout (this is not an imperial stout) with a reasonably lively carbonation. I have awarded bonus points for the truly excellent artwork on the label. A welcome addition to my repeat order list and further proof that I am preferring American beers to Belgians.

Tap at CBC 2014. Beer in the glass deep black, small head. Starts fine spicy, hoppy background, well balanced. Finish again milder, soft-malty. Malty-dry aftertaste. Okay.
