3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
burnt umber hue with voluminous red brown topper, medium high carbonation, smells at first like a hoppy brown ale, dark fruit, molasses and a very slight smokey whiff. Earthy spicey hopiness, prune, trace of smoke in the flavor. Medium and lively body. I donít really know what constitutes a foreign stout so canít say much about how it compares to others or if it is true to style. After the sip a slowly subsiding biterness gives way to smokey sweetness.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
from Mikkeller & Friends - pretty black beer under a persistent beige foam; bready with some roasted malts, a bit mineral with notes of black chocolate; full-bodied, velvety mouthfeel, earthy and pretty sweet, light bitterness and some residual sweetness in a long coffeish, earthy and nutty finish - interesting profile

This pleasant surprise is very dark brown, almost black, with red hues. It has a dark, malty aroma, while not being too roasted. Itís nice and easy. The flavor is really nice, almost fruity, and nearly candy-like, but not in the way that most fruity stouts are. Itís really nice and inviting, a real treat. It has a soft, beautiful mouthfeel and finish, nearly chocolaty, thin, but complex and mature. Bueno.

UPDATED: MAR 8, 2014 [5266-20130426] Tap. Roasted malt grain and light coffee-infused aroma. Black body with a huge long-lasting creamy light brown head. Spiced boozy yeast bread flavour has a Belgian cucumber-y base. Medium-full body. Very odd at first, I thought the Belgian yeastiness was jalapenos. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4

A tremendous, lasting, dense tan head covers the almost black pour. Highly yeasty nose procures spicy phťnols which veer toward medicine amidst flowery, fruity esters in a rather alcoholic surrounding from a sub 9% ale. Underneath it all, talkative roasted grain pairs with a smoky, eucalyptus, earthy bottom to ensure somber thought developments. In mouth, the intensely biting carbonation surprises. You are clearly in a Belgian context aromatically speaking and texture Wise, but the spiciness, alcohol, roast and smoke seem less interested in working together and more interested in picking fights. Iím not feeling a great deal of balance here whereas Iím usually fond of Stillwater offerings, and of dry beers and that one surely is.

12 ounce bottle - black pour with a fairly thick tan lace - nose of charred, bitter maltiness, raisin, dried cherries, smoke - there is also a moderate fusel alcohol presence reminiscent of model airplane glue which is pretty off-putting, which is a shame because the other notes are nice - medium body, with a lightly oily, mouth-coating texture - flavor lacks some depth - some bittersweet chocolate, anise, a touch of smoke, light tart cherry acidity on the tail end - there is a sharp mineral note near the end - finish is a bit high on the retro-nasal alcohol presence, but at least the flavor is mostly devoid fusel alcohol flavor - certainly one of the weakest offerings from this brewery - I wonder if the 750s produced at another facility are like this.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle poured into a tulip - dark brown with a tan head that quickly disappears with no return. Aroma is belgian yeast with hints of dates and sugar. Flavor is the same with coffee and mineral notes but completely flat half way through drinking it. I didnít enjoy this.

pours clear dark brown with a small yet reviving beige-orange head, some retention and lacing. burnt malts, roastiness-plenty, ashes, cacao, slightly milky and dusty, belgian profile - yeast, dark fruitiness, hint of bubblegum, molasses and dark candi; very boozy but also quite smoky and earthy. average to moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily, dry bitter coffee-mineral-piney harsh finish. o-k.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
BOD 10/8/13. Dark, almost black pour, with a weak head that dissipates quickly with almost no lacing. Nose is of Belgian yeast phenolic esters over a light background of chocolate, plum, prune and licorice. Medium body with a nice smooth, almost slick, mouthfeel. Low carbonation level. The complex flavor profile contains those present in the nose. Unfortunately, the phenols predominate and mask what could have been a nice complex ale. The finish is smooth and a phenolic aftertaste lingers. Had this been fresh, I would have scored it lower. Due to itís age, I gave it the benefit of the doubt.
