Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing thatís for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So letís get the stories flowing and share a little íFolkloreí. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

burnt umber hue with voluminous red brown topper, medium high carbonation, smells at first like a hoppy brown ale, dark fruit, molasses and a very slight smokey whiff. Earthy spicey hopiness, prune, trace of smoke in the flavor. Medium and lively body. I donít really know what constitutes a foreign stout so canít say much about how it compares to others or if it is true to style. After the sip a slowly subsiding biterness gives way to smokey sweetness.

Draft at Of Love & Regret. Pours very dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Tastes like bitter coffee, raisins, booze, light syrup. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet booze, raisin, cherry.

Mild fresh-squeezed darks fruit aroma, prune juice, some yeast. Medium dark brown, flat. Light melange of raisins, prunes, and dates. Light chocolate roast emerges in mid palate. Decided alcohol warmth. Medium body and just a little spritzy. Fun on the tongue. A nice take on the Belgian stout.

On tap at the Stillwater at Dig Bar. Foreign Stout. One of their rare dark beers, itís brewed with the Rochefort yeast strain. It pours a dark brown with a rusty beige head. The aroma is plum, roasty chocolate with a bunch of umami meatiness. The mouthfeel is quite nice, silky smooth & full bodied. The taste is sharp, fruity, dark roasty, pitted fruits - cherry-like.

Bottle from BOTW. Brought this back for my mates, but they will all get it on tap next week, as will I, so I drank it. very fruity nose, grapes and cherries, light citrus. Maybe some chocolate, coffee, and licorice, but itís light. Dull black with lace. Flavor is more stout-like; lots of dark chocolate, some coffee, roasted wood, fruits. Nice and interesting. Not a straight-forward stout, something spicy and Belgian. Good stuff, though. Body it a bit thin, but i dig it.

(Bottled 1/2/14) - 1 Finger orangy brown head of fine bubbles. Dark black body. Slight smokey aroma. Dark malts carry over into the flavor. Burnt malt on the back end. Some mouth feel, though seems proper for the style and alcohol content. Says unfiltered. But there was no sludge on the bottom of the bottle after pouring. Nice sipping stout.

Bottle at Union Square Cafe NYC. Superb bottle label. Dark black colour, decent carbonation, off white head. Never really understood Belgian stouts before, they always seemed quite stouty and not so Belgian, but I think Iím slowly getting there. This one had clearly a good roasty malt profile, but then a spiciness and slightly herbal note which was very interesting. I was a fan, and this beer did extraordinary things in conjunction with the fennel shortbread which came with one of the desserts in this place. It was a taste sensation.

Bottle pour. Very dark with medium head. Aroma is multi-dimensional with some coffee and some sour fruit. Malty flavor with a quick change to chocolate, coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. Very roasted flavor to finish. I really enjoy this beer. Very complex. Delicious.

Deep dark brown coloured body, about 95% opaque with a thin, oily brown head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, earth, oatmeal, anise and a touch of caramel - strong. Medium to Slightly-Full-Bodied; Strong dry earthy flavour at first with a lot of oatmeal and roasted malt, some light cacao, a moderate amount of yeast notes and some light tastes of oysters. Aftertaste is slightly sweeter with caramel and toffee, but the very dry assertively bitter flavour doesnít sit too well. Overall, a fairly one dimensional and rather uninspiring beer with not enough profile or complexity to be a good beer in any of the stout categories. This tastes more like a dry stout than anything else, but even that category wouldnít make this beer good. Iím guessing the high ratings are from the label on the front. Take that off or replace it and youíd lose the lustre of this beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle after a hockey game in Arlington, Virignia on 19-March-2014 - Thanks Kevin!
