3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark black colour, very dark, creamy white head. Soft aromas, malty, chocolate, herbs. Gentle taste, complex but not intense, hints of roast, chocolate again, herbal sweetness and mild bitterness. I’ve not explained that very well but it was very tasty amd interesting, and I imagine would go well with food. Defies style classification.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bo Brooks’ Lighthouse Liquors, Baltimore. Mahogany in colour, with a slight, off-white, head and decent carbonation. Dee Belgian yeastiness, candy sugars, dark fruits and spice, leading to a gentle finish. Alcohol was well hidden. Very good.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/19/2014. Pours fairly pitch black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, berry, licorice, chocolate, cocoa, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, roast/bready malt, and spice notes; with great strength. Taste of raisin, plum, fig, berry, licorice, chocolate, cocoa, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, berry, licorice, toast, dark bread, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, roast/bready malt, and spice flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome dark saison style. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, roast/bready malt, and spice flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Stillwater A Saison Darkly has a thin, cream-colored head, a dark brown appearance, some bubbles, and pretty much no lacing left behind. The aroma is of a spice basket or potpourri, that one would purchase at a gift store. Taste is of spiced, brown bread, dark (but, not burnt) malt, essentially no bitterness, and zero alcohol detected. Mouthfeel is full, and Stillwater A Saison Darkly finishes semi-dry and not difficult to drink, although it is certainly a sipper, rather than a gulper. RJT

3.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
It pours with the vitality of a coke, with so much fizz that I worry it will be horrible. It smells wonderful however. There’s coffee, raspberry, rye bread, sherbet and liqueur. It’s a little cloying in the mouth at first, but dissipates on the tongue, with aniseed and nuts giving way to coffee and soft hops. The 8% alcohol leaves a burning in the back of my throat like a smooth scotch. All up an odd beer but not unpleasant - don’t know that it knows what it’s trying to be.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Dutch’s. Dark brown color.. Kind of clear reddish body, held up to the light. Thin tan head, leaving good, thicker lace. Dark fruit, burnt sugars, mild roast. Some floral notes later in the palate, mild earthy hop. Some dark bitter chocolate. Something like blue berry or acai berry, maybe that’s the schisandra berry? Moderate bitter taste, lighter sweet. Medium to bigger body, kind of slick texture. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Pretty solid tasty floral dark saison to sip on. Towards the end flavor is mostly dark chocolate and acai berry, a pretty nice mix... Reminds me of the dark chocolate covered acai berries my mom found at a health food place once (they were really tasty...).

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
5 oz draft at Beer Street in Brooklyn, NY. Interesting to see such a dark version of a saison, transcending all clarity and progressing right into an opaque dark brown reminiscent of Guiness. Aroma is heavenly with notes of coffee, brown bread, and a hint of fallen leaves. Taste matches the bouquet with layers of dark chocolate, Robusto coffee, and charred malt unfolding one after another. Surprisingly light on the palate for its color and ABV, though the taste lingers. Lacks the funk or dryness of most saisons, making it more akin to porter. Would be excellent with tiramisu.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
I can recognize this is a well put together brew, but was a little turned off because it was more Belgian strong than Saison. Very dry, nutty, with dark fruit and spices. Ara and favors clashed a little but it’s of good quality. "

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz. bottle purchased at Julio’s Liquors. Black of course with fast fleeting head in the snifter. The aroma burnt barely, flowers and a strange fruit note, mild yeast.
Flavor is toasted grain, medicinal flower notes, red grape and a spicy/ herbal yeast toward the finish. After the sip it gets real herbal with a dry texture. Very herbal when warm, to much so. I’m still looking for a dark saison the I truly enjoy drinking.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. Pours an opaque ebony with a loose ring of bubbles. Aroma is artificial banana candy, soy, merlot and blackberry. Taste is lightly tart blackberry, spicy merlot, oxidized apple, salty soy, raisin and maybe a touch of wooden hop. Medium-large body is smooth and well balanced. Medium carbonation is smooth and doesn’t distract. Lots of complex tastes but they end up in a small, overlapping and interfering wave pool of flavor. None of them grabbed me so that I’d just hang on out to sea floating it.
