The Stillwater Sensory Series is a collaboration between Stillwater Artisanal and singular musical artists. In this first collaboration, Stillwater works with Lower Dens to make an ale based on an interpretation of their song, "In the End is the Beginning." On the bottle itself, a QR code will link to an exclusive Lower Dens performance of the song. Ultimately, this is a true artistic collaboration that aims to create a full sensory experience - sound, sight, smell, touch, and taste. www.stillwatersensory.com

Pours amber with a large head. Nose shows saison yeast, soft spicy, floral and pear notes. Flavours include a stronger hibiscus note along with a bit of orange marmalade. Some farmhouse yeast notes remain. Finishes very dry. Carbonation is much too high.

A floral ale not a million miles removed from a saison. Quite a subtle beer and very sessionable. Intriguing appearance: pale gold with extremely busy champagne-like carbonation and a fat head that stayed better than Phar Lap. Unsurprisingly, the aroma is decidedly floral - hibiscus, presumably, although my knowledge of flora is half-baked at best. Very grainy, almost wit-like, with some Belgian yeasty notes. The nose is too restrained to really excite the senses. Medium-bodied and soft in the mouth - not at all prickly considering the visible bubbles. Very rounded flavours - grains, violet candies and faint dried fruit with just a hint of sourness and blue-cheese funk to disrupt what might otherwise be a tad bland. Artisanal indeed. (375ml bottle from Leura Cellars)

JBPortland (1211) - Portland, Maine, USA - JUL 2, 2014
375ml bottle pours hazy dark orange with a finger of head. Nose is musty bready grain, yeast spice, apple, floral citrus. Taste is bready malt, grain, white wine, apple juice, light spice, soft yeast. Finish is dry bready malt, yeasty spice, white grape juice, apple. Ok I guess, but I don’t really know what this beer is trying to be. Underwhelming.

Pours a murky, wheat-golden with a white head. Mead-wheat nose. Full body with a light scrub. Pleasant. Much more sweet than tart. Beligany, wheaty, and easy-drinking.

Bottle - Funky lemon, herbal and chalky. Cloudy yellow gold with a decent white head. Funky yeast, fruity banana esters, light citrus and spice. A wild Hef if anything.

Bottle to IPA glass Celery, apricot, peat, lemon, green apple or cider, and funk. Amberish yellow with a bright white frothy head with lots of lacing. Wheat, cider, grass, and funk. Well, that’s smell, sight, touch and taste done, and throughout, I’ve been listening to Lower Dens. A bit strange...but that won’t affect my beer rating.

Spab (2845) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 31, 2014
375 ml bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours a murky dull golden colour with large, dense white head. Aroma is effervescent fruitiness, flowers, light spice and grains. Flavour is quite fruity with apples and berries, lots of floral character, grains and a little hibiscus and white pepper. Lively carbonation. Interesting one.
