tap at The Growler. Apparently a schwarzbier/saison hybrid is much like a black IPA. Nose is lovely hops, citrus peel on the nose. Lots of toasted malts in the body, roasted barley hulls, chocolate, vanilla, plums. Sweet bodied, finishes with some hop resins.

12oz bottle I picked up at Schneider’s DC. Looks awesome in the glass, opaque black, slightly thick, with some foamy, beige head. Has a very typical Stillwater aroma, lightly herbal, some dark chocolate, a little malt, a little potpourri, some cracker, toast. Flavor is pretty nice, only lightly sweet, some herbs, a little straw, some licorice, a little cherry, some soap. Medium bodied, dry finish. Sorry, but this is a black saison, not a schwarzbier. Absolutely unique, but only the color fits the style description of a schwarz.

Stillwater Small Black. Serving: Draft at Max’s Taphouse. It pours a ruddy black with a tan head. The nose has a light roasted notes with a bit of cocoa powder. Light on the tongue with aggressive carbonation. The flavor has a nice bit of roasted malt, very light burnt notes, and a slight earthy character. The yeast offers a slight fruity spiciness. Light in body with a clean finish. Nice brew.

New Beer Distributors, NY 12oz ($3.45): Pours dark brown with a small head. Aroma is roasted malt, the distinct Stillwater yeast from their saisons, light underlying hoppiness. Taste is a slightly disjointed mix of the two styles, but that makes things a little interesting. Light roasted maltiness. Some stickiness. Underlying saison dryness with a Belgian tinge. Hard to explain beer, but good and adventerous.

Bottle poured a deep dark cola with a medium soapy off-white head and minimal lacing. Aroma is coffee and roasty malt with slight notes of smoke and nuttiness. Taste begins similarly with roasted malt flavor and subtle smokiness followed by spicy hop flavor leading to a nutty dry finish. First schwarzbier, albeit a hybrid, was truly enjoyable.
