3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Roasty and Saisony yeast strains, this is just an ashy saison, it’s ok but disjointed and unbalanced

With moderate head retention and a dark brown appearance, this black saison ale wafts slightly of cloves. It tastes of dark, bitter chocolate with a dry finish.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a deep brown, a bit hazy appearance with a light brown head. Anise, roasted malty, a bit spicy, a bit earthy aroma. Kind of tangy, cherry dark fruity, plum, grape, big licorice, light chocolate flavor. Kind of an odd ball but not bad per se.

Woah, really a black beer. Light bubbly tan head. Atoma is earthy, fruity, smokey and yeasty. Very complex. A yeasty, earthy, fruity saison that delivers on this hybrid style. Fizzy, wet mouthfeel but dry finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap at Beer Authority. Deep black pour with a thin white head. The nose is decent - a bit of soft cocoa and licorice along with some light fruitiness on the back. A little bit of tartness and a touch of earthiness as well. Fairly unusual finish - herbal with a touch of something like chestnuts.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Licorice and peppercorn-spiced black malt. Burnt grains, crackers and breads; nicely toasty; notes of cocoa, licorice, ink, char. Highly carbonated, seemingly sweet, tasting of saccharin and burnt cola / caramel with an astringent, lean sweet-and-sour cookie finish. Twangy and a bit thin in the body. After some great batches from Two Roads for Stillwater and Evil Twin, I’m sad to say this is the first let down I’ve had out of the Stratford, CT brewery.
