Draft at The Trappist, Oakland. Fairly flat pour, dark black, not much head. Rather interesting. Dark in color, light in complexity and alcohol, yet rather seducing. Little hints of roast, chocolate malts, burnt toast, and maybe just the slightest touch of barnyard...blended beautifully, but barely. I liked it.

Not a huge fan. It isnít a schwarzbier and not even close. Kind of a Belgian dark.

Draft. Pours deep brown with an off white head. Lightly roasted malts, some nutty sweetness, faint chocolate, and wisps of spicy yeasts. Really clean and balanced. Delicious.

Shaker pint draft at Pinocchioís in Media, Pennsylvania. The pour is black along with some brown ruby. Smallish light tan head. The aroma is roast, light char, straw and a bit of spice yeast. The taste is an interesting mix of the Schwarz roast. light char notes and the straw, grass and yeast of the base Saison. The palate is light bodied with soft carbonation and a mineral spice yeast dry finish. Interesting and fun experiment of a beer.

pours dark brown/black with a thin tan head. aroma is subdued but roasty with mild cocoa and a bit of dark fruit...all very faint. flavor follows suit and adds good bitterness...spicy/grassy hops...dark fruitiness subtley cuts in. mouthfeel is light/medium and lively with a roasty/dark fruity/charred finish that lingers.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head - looks like a stout. Nose brings out lots of roasted malt, some earthy notes, a touch of farmhouse character, and some unsweetened cocoa. Flavour is quite sophisticated, bringing out typical black saison qualities above all - with roasted malt, farmhouse notes, earth, along with some highly astringent citrus notes on the finish. Drinks more like an astringent citrusy black saison rather than a hybrid with a schwarzbier. The more you drink, the more astringent and almost sour the finish becomes, which throws it off a bit. Still very solid, but could do with less citric / astringent qualities.

Bottle. Black with a creamy tan head. Sweet grainy chocolate and caramel aroma. Good creamy palate. Tastes of chocolate, drip coffee, and roasted grain with a hint of fruit and vanilla.

dark sepia, puffy off-egg head that quickly falls to a thin ring. Intensely smokey, grainy nose reminiscent of coffee grains but far more balanced. Flavor even dryer, mid palate and beyond is smokey and watery, the grain tasting heartier because of it. Very clean profile, highlights dryness. Probably the cleanest schwarz Iíve had.

Black, thin head. Some fruit and spice in aroma. A little choc/roast.Sour berry. Taste is mildly fruity, light, dry, with lots of roast, roast bitter, spice, clovish character with the chocolate/roast.Flavors seem to clash for me, not too into the citrusy-roast combo.Tart,tangy.Burning carbination. A hybrid style I will not frequent much.

On Draught
Pours a dark... pretty much black color with some ruby hues where the light hits. The head is small and well retained leaving a good lacing on the glass.

The aroma is mild but nice, some good but light bright fruitiness, some berry and to a lesser degree some banana. The roastiness is very mild... just mild all around on the bouquet here... but good.

The flavor is dry, it features that mild toasty character that Carafa malt always does, I always dig itís subtle but unmistakable charm. The beer has a nice fruitiness and an all around herbaly bitter character.

Itís pretty good beer, it gives me more of a Saison vibe than a Schwarzbier one, but itís all so chill either way.
